2011 L320 rear propshaft

Hi, I'm getting a bit of a bit of a metal knocking as driving, it comes and goes, but starting to come more often, defiantly centre of the car, behind front seat area.

Climbing under the car I was looking for heat shields, exhaust rattle, wheel dust guards, as it is speed dependant.

Anyway I've come across this, I guess it shouldn't be this loose 😂

But from inside the car I hear that metallic tinging noise as in the video when I knock the propshaft, also there seems to be a grease line on bottom of car from around the centre joint in the propshaft.

Question is, is it just a bearing?, or full propshaft needed cars on around 76/77k miles ?

Thanks in advance.

Recalling having read some previous post on others experience with replacing the rear prop, if you do replace the complete prop make sure you buy a good quality one like GKN or something, as it would appear the cheap one's are just that, cheap, nasty crap which won't last or not balanced.

Cheers

The centre bearing can be replaced but I've read more than once on here that the person soon after ended up replacing the whole shaft as the centre bearing wasn't any good.

As Col says, fit a new OEM/similar quality prop shaft. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I had mine replaced last autumn after 103k. I thought it might just be the centre joint bush, but was glad I accepted my indie's advice to have the whole shaft replaced. The photo shows the old one was completely shot. It's effectively a consumable component on the L320 and L319

The genreal advice is to have a proper quality replacemewnt, eg GKN as anything cheaper is a fals economy.

Apparenlty the bolts fixing the flanges to the transfer box and rear diff require some really serious effort to undo!

The difference in the drive characteristics was immediately noticeable. Cost ~£450

Spent a couple of hours underneath this morning, it's off and did panic it may not come off due to some of the Star bolts looking rounded off in places, so guess its not the first time it's been off?

The rubber is torn nearly half way around and also the middle joint and front joint are quite lumpy and rough.

Guess there meant to be nice and smooth ?

So it does look like a full new propshaft and new bolts.

I've read somewhere, rear bolts should be 150nm and front 55nm, does that's should about right ?, the fronts where definitely alot more than 55nm.

Thanks for the replies

👍🏻
