United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Firenze Red
2012 SDV6 Firenze Red

Evening,

Some of you may have seen my other threads but wanted to keep a thread in one place to document the journey, issues, mods, trips etc all in one place.

So a fortnight ago I went to view the car I now own, sold a 997 Carrera convertible I bought to celebrate my 40th birthday and road trip down to Le Mans 24h last month. Before the Porsche I owned an L200 Barbarian which was amazing and had it not been for the road trip would still be with me now. It fitted well for us, my daughter owns a horse so bed was great for transporting all the associated ‘stuff’ she and Neddy required along with towing capabilities, durable interior and Mitsi reliability.

When the Porsche sold I started looking for another truck, the only drawbacks with the truck were 90% of the time it was a family car and 10% of the time it needed to be a workhorse. The times you need to use it as a family car there is not secure/waterproof load space unless you stack it in the rear cab, this is less than ideal and uses up another seat. Yes you can fit a canopy on the back but for everyday driving it makes it ‘seem’ a bigger vehicle than it is if that makes sense.

So started to consider other options and having owned a 2010 RRS Luxury edition before it seems to tick all the boxes. I also toyed with a Disco 4 but don’t need 7 seats so figured it was probably overkill.

I returned to the previous gen and made a list of what I wanted, it looked like - 8spd, Harmon Kardon, tow bar, good history, sub 100k and standard oh and not black! When you start to drill down into specifics it limits the market considerably.

The car I bought I saw at the beginning of my search, it met most of the criteria but a couple of things made me nervous. After viewing a few others we decided to go and take a look. It hasn’t been washed, was allegedly a dealer part/ex and wasn’t looking it’s best.

Two days in and the n/s boot strut through a wobbly and the ball joint on the tailgate end of the strut broke down, strut broke off and boot refused to open.

Then realised the drivers door wasn’t locking, into garage today and the lock and latch mechanism has failed, new one ordered and going back in tomorrow for replacement. Not long after picking the car up I noticed squeaking from the front, mainly low speed and when turning. Garage grease up the arb bushes and it went away, several days later it returned.

I knew I'd seen them somewhere: https://www.powerfuluk.com/vehicles/range-...-2010.html

No guarantees it's not cheaper from LR, of course! 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Thanks both Thumbs Up ordered from LR today and be here Mon, will satisfy my OCD once swapped.

Today the door motor was replaced after diagnosis thah this was what was stopping my drivers door locking, all in fine working order now. My arb bushes didn’t arrive until late in the afternoon so it has to go back next week to have them replaced.

As for the Apple CarPlay and your OCD, I can highly recommend the IDCORE wireless Apple CarPlay unit for £500. It's plug and play and you can hide the box in the kick panel under the glove box so you don't even know it's there.
You only lose the built in Sat Nav on your dash display (you'll have Apple Maps or Google Maps or Waze etc anyway) on the centre screen but apart from that it's superb and keeps the factory screen/hardware etc. and can be removed in 15 minutes and put back to factory if needed. 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue
2005 4.2L Supercharged Java Black - gone but was my first love.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If we all point our RR's in the same direction and accelerate at the same time can we turn back time?

If you don't want to fit a CarPlay solution yourself, there's also a guy on Facebook (Lee Yates) who does mobile installs of something that sounds a lot like the IDCORE solution (retains the existing screen) - he also does full Tesla style screens and a half-way house solution, but if you're an originality buff you'd probably prefer to keep the OE screen.

Everything you say about the L200 rings true for me; I had a Ranger before the car before the RRS and I still miss it, but it was woefully impractical 99% of the time and just utterly brilliant 1% of the time. It also made me drive like a complete hooligan (6spd manual, 3.2ltr diesel) 100% of the time Laughing I'd have another in a heartbeat if it was possible to have a dry 'boot' without adding a full van back, as you say.

I turn 44 next month .. is this why I desperately also want a 911? Laughing 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Nice looking motor, I have the same with all black details and alloys. Fully loaded with every option and is my go to motor for long drives. I did the Idcore install a few months back and was very easy and took at most a few hours. You do need to order a long 3.5mm cable with one or both ends 90 degree to make the install perfect.
Do the start button at the same time as the Idcore install, the same trim has to come off.
I found a new button on eBay for 55.00 from memory. Enjoy! 2018 Telsa MS

Thanks Scrumpy - particular fan of the SVR in your avatar too Very Happy

Just reading about the IDCore installs in the other forum and looks a great bit of kit so might explore that. I like the fact it all remains OEM in appearance.

Yes the 'forties' sees you NEEDING something from Stuttgart I was told..... Rolling Eyes

See the Tesla style screens on FB and have to be honest I am not a fan at all, looks all wrong to me for the era of the car. The IDCore is definitely a consideration for me though.

Agree with you on double cab, they are a great proposition but you have to enter into it with some clear expectation of what purpose it will serve, they have also taken a massive increase in used values so when compared to the RRS seem quite expensive.

Thanks for the post, interesting to know the fascia has to come off - I assumed it just popped out the dash and disconnected form the rear??

You do not need to remove the facia to replace start button just lever up very carefully so as not to damage trim.

So it’s been a bit quiet, few bits and pieces going on but pleased to report I found a genuine start button which should be here soon to replace the work one. It’s going in next week for the new ARB bushes to rid it of the incessant squeaking, plus an A service.

Also had an issue with rear passenger door lock not unlocking so having that diagnosed and fixed, already had fromt drivers side replaced but that wasn’t locking, the rear door isn’t unlocking! Lol! Also having the suspension checked after I logged in another thread it was doing odd things when parked on a slope and put into access mode - for some reason it seems to think there is an obstacle under the car so back end goes into extended mode?!? Park it on the flat and put it into access mode and all is well, bit odd but hopeful it’s just a sensor.

MPG not dropped below 30min yet which I am impressed with! Spoken to Alive about their SDV6 remap, Martin was super helpful on the phone and happy to chat about R&D that went into it. Not seeking more power just want to eliminate flat spot at bottom end - he says it transforms the power delivery and avoids the lurch you get at junctions/roundabouts which will be amazing! Sadly it’s not OBD so either have to go to Alive HQ or Alive dealer Oxford way who can do it whilst I wait.

Drove it at night for the first time -sounds odd doesn’t it a few weeks into ownership - forgot how lovey the cabin is at night!
