As said earlier the Sensor for the Auto Headlamps is a integral part of the Rain Sensor, it appears to activate if the light level falls below 100 Lux which is apparently the equivalent of a dark overcast day, quite common in the UK if I remember right.

Sadly in practice it doesn’t activate on a dark over cast day ! Hence the post.

I have my lights switched to auto all the time and they work perfectly - come on at the right time and I dont have to worry about turning them on and off - unlike most here I think a great feature. The only down side is you cannot use front and rear fog lamps with the headlamps in auto.

Auto wipers - are Ok but I leave them on off unless rain looks imminent. I dont know about the UK but we have these huge months and locusts flying around and when they splatter on your windscreen near the sensor that sets the wipers off - not good on a dry windscreen covered in dust and grit. When I bought my car it had a scratched windscreen caused by the wipers and this very issue.

Might be a market thing, both front and rear fog's work in Auto Headlamp position with mine, although they do have to be switched on separately for obvious reasons.

Fortunately we don't live in a land where every living thing is out to kill you .. so we don't tend to have a locust problem

That said, if I leave mine on Auto the car will very occasionally have a fit and decide to wipe an entirely clean and dry windscreen all the same, so like you I try to remember to turn them off again.

Try being the operative word there..

I find the auto lights on mine (2010 facelift) OK, and like every other car, the auto wipers are either too sensitive or not sensitive enough and I'm not really convinced they're any easier than regular wipers; same story in my 2006 BMW and the Mrs 2018 MINI (and the MINI seems to only have two speeds regardless of how sensitive you set the controls .. a tad too slow or ridiculously fast ) 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

In prefacelifts you can’t have the fogs on in auto, as you can’t physically pull the knob out in auto pos.
if you could pull it out, the fogs would be on all the time the ignition was on (some would like that! )

Bmw, mini and RRS all use the same rain sensor

I've turned auto wipers off and now turn lights on as and when needed
as you have said are a pain the come on even when it not raining lol
I don't even have the rear wiper set to come on when you select reverse gear

Never ever noticed option to turn rear wiper with reverse gear engaged feature off.

The rear wiper coming on in reverse when the main wipers are on has been a feature of Landrovers for about 25 years - my old 1997 Freelander also did it as my current RRS does - cannot remember if my 94 Disco did it. 07MY RRS TDV6

Not really sure what possessed me to think the rear wiper came on every time you engaged reverse, without the front wipers on at same time.

it in the setting options when you press the info button I only came across it as was looking to turn the dipped mirrors when reversing

Nothing in mine, they may have done away with it on the later facelift cars as I think they changed the configuration lay out slightly as well, as on mine you press the button on the end of the stalk to operate rear wash wipe.

col on mine you pull the wiper stalk towards you to get the rear wiper to spray and wipe push towards the dash to get it to wipe intermittently
like you say they might of done away with that feature on the face-lift model
