Smoke tester finished this evening. Resistance wire wrapped around the wick and then fitted into the pot.

12v feed now wired into the sides.

Baby oil now added to the mixture.

Whoever at Amazon packed this box - torch wicks, 12v cable with crocodile clips, resistance wire and baby oil would be as confused as hell Laughing

Quick zap with 12v to ensure that we got smoke…

Quick puff of the lungs to see the result of the smoke machine:

I then connected it to the airline and fed it with 10PSI and saw a leak.

This makes perfect sense as it’s leaking right by cylinder 1. It’s cylinder 1 that logs most of the misfires when cold on the diagnostics. The only thing I can think of down there is the adapter plate that houses the injectors and sits between the charge coolers and the cylinder head.

Am thinking of tearing the whole lot down, and replacing all of the gaskets including the valve cover ones whilst it’s in pieces.

A job I could do without doing but hey ho.

Nice find, I'm replacing the pcv shortly. New plugs are fitted misfire counts drastically reduced but the engine was getting warm by then sooooo let's see. I'm sure there is a vacuum leak so will need to smoke test as well I'm going to be using a glow plug in my DIY smoke machine.

Have reset the engine adaptations and was better on a test drive, this and the front snout bearing replacement are hopefully the last jobs on my list.....oh top up the gearbox after finding and fixing the gearbox oil leak new oil arrived today.

Whilst the super charger is torn down might be worth upgrading the pulley. Maybe also checking out your fuel injectors and the seals.

Also there's a host of sensors down there

Do you know what sensors are down there?

I’ve ordered a bearing kit for the charger, and am ordering all the gaskets from the charger down to the heads including all the o-rings for the injectors.

I’ve been thinking about a 10% pulley but can’t be bothered with machining the snout to fit it.

atleast the MAP sensor, knock sensors, air temp sensor I think.

6% doesnt need machining if i remember rightly, got mine done by the nice people at

https://powerhouse.uk/supercharger-perform...r-pulleys/

i live closer so I drove down, swapped it there and then and went back.

Aren’t those sensors down the back of the engine? My smoke leak is at the OS front corner right beside cylinder 1. 2002 Range Rover 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

While the SC is off, check/replace the plastic coolant pipes

They are but since the SC is off it makes life easier.

This is underneath my Supercharger when it was removed last year.

The pipes under mine are rubber so I wonder if they've already been changed at some point.

Thanks Guys Smile

I've got valve cover gaskets and the o-rings that go around the plugs already. Am about to order the rest of it so I've got it and at least then I can replace it all.

Plan is to remove the charger and then attach smoke tester to the charge cooler as that should then give me a better view of where it's leaking on that side.

Valve cover gaskets on the NS bank (even cylinders) say to discharge the air conditioning in the workshop manual. With the charge cooler out of the way I think I should be able to slide it up without touching the air con pipes so it makes sense to tackle it all in one go I reckon.

Here's what I'm ordering this afternoon.

The only bits I'm not ordering are the gaskets between the charge coolers and the plate that goes on top of the charger as they're expensive, don't appear to be leaking and are easy to get to, and the one that lives on top of the charger as that was new only a few months ago.

one thing, the valve cover gasket seems a bit short for me, so I cut some from the old gasket and merged together with gasket maker.

Thanks for the offer Smile

I'm really hoping to get this lot finished at the weekend so I've just ordered all of them from the local dealer for collection tomorrow morning.
