Dash Engine Warning That Went

Grumbly car aside, its actually ok to drive in a normal manner but a bit sluggish if you want to reach to motorway "cruising" speeds instead of NSL. However, sometimes when overtaking on a normal road, you want to accelerate quickly to ensure your TED is minimal. So a couple of times on my recent 1500 mile trip to Ireland, around and back, I've "buried the pedal" and its begun to accelerate but then Engine System Failure flashes up on the dash Shocked
Instead of going into limp mode or any amber/red lights staying on the dash, it just goes away... IID doesn't register anything either.
Any ideas?

What engine is it? I had similar in the past and it was a sticky EGR valve - needed cleaner!
