The end of 3g networks is nigh

I see that over the next few years 3g is being switched off by all the UK phone networks. Vodafone will do this over the next 20 months or so.

This means that many of us will no longer be able to get a data signal from a SIM card inserted into the RRS and I guess consequently use interactive services like incontrol and remote to check the car is locked and where we left it.

I guess there is not a 4g upgrade available meaning the interactive service will be rendered useless? MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)

I was thinking along the same lines myself. But so rarely can I get the Traffic Information to work, I don't suppose it will make much difference to me.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a 4g/3g device - a 4g side that talks to the infrastructure and then a 3g side that talks to the car. There's likely to be a lot of cars around with this problem. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Update on when we loose 3g:

Vodafone - 2023
https://www.vodafone.co.uk/help-and-information/3g-switch-off

O2 - TBA

EE - Early 2023

Three - End of 2024 https://www.three.co.uk/hub/3g-network-news/

This will mean 2g only service on the SIM cards installed on 2017 and earlier model year vehicles. MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)

Er and you can get a 2G service? I have a number of 2G devices and they just don't work where I live due to no 2G on the masts. Been that way a couple of years and a bloody pain it is too

In my area Vodafone is useless, I'm about 6 miles from a very large town and yet struggle for a mobile signal in my village (hardly a hamlet, over 6,000 residents).
As my company has a contract with them I'm stuffed. Without internet calling, my mobile is useless at home.
Too many people making these kind of decisions that never venture out of their conurbations. RRS HSE Dynamic SDV6 2014

You don't need the SIM for the Incontrol remote services, so you can still lock it and communicate with it but you will need it for for the Nav, weather and traffic etc.

Wouldn't think its too hard to upgrade anyway. Would expect it'll probably need a modem (sim reader) and/or a software update. It's only a data connection after all.

Remote still has to use a SIM, but is the internal SIM I presume.

That would be 3G on earlier cars for sure. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled

Hopefully it's just a change of module and an update as the car is absolutely fine running off any wifi connection.
