Just had my right hand tailgate gas strut pop out of it's mount whilst closing the boot, unfortunately i didn't catch it before the boot closed and now the retaining hole on the strut has broken.
Anyway going to source one tonight on fleabay

My question is.....on scrolling through the ads i have seen photo's of the strut being attached to the tailgate with the piston (narrow part) on the tailgate and also the other way round.
Mine has piston attached to the tailgate....so which way round is it???

It’s a common fault from the early days.

The main worry is whether you still have a thread in the chassis.
And if you have don’t mess with it too much and loose it before you have the threaded ball joint to refit.

Bazairly left and right struts are slightly different but I don’t think it really matters.

I think the way yours it fitted kinda sounded ok.
Don’t get confused with struts for the glass hatch
