Range rover sport 2006 - 176k 2.7.

Hi all,

Hopefully some of you knowlagable folk can help me out. 🙏

Recently had an investigation into my various failures on the dash, transmission, hdc, park brake .. plus engine running lump and cutting out. All randomly happened after a long trip.

Turns out a blowing injector has melted some of the main engine loom which was poorly insulated.

Mechanic says it need a new loom from LR fitted is going to be 'roughly' £2400 ... I've spent a ton on her already, so spending that I think is just not worth it.

Is it feasible to fix the loom possibly or use a breakers for a second hand loom and maybe try fit myself, I'm mechanicly but not particularly experienced... I'm told you don't have to take the body off.

Ive looked for a walkthrough or video but can't find anyone info, perhaps it's too big a risk to try fit a second hand loom?...

Have you tried an automotive electrician? They may be able to just replace the damaged sections...

I am in the process of finishing that on an Insurance write off that I bought in September.

The main wiring loom travels across the back of the bulkhead, extends to the very front on both sides and penetrates the bulkhead at both sides. In order to do the change it is necessary to strip out the dashboard to get access to the body control unit.

Hi thanks you all for your reply's, as it's a non runner andy, I'm currently awaiting it's recovery tomorrow, so when it arrives back from the garage from the initial diagnostics I will take some pictures of where it is burnt.

Nveeate, I've been in touch with an auto electrician who says that he may be able to fix the loom but has a 2-week waiting list until he can have a look... If he can't then he could fit a salvaged loom depending on how involved the job is.

Simon 🙏...., I had to replace the passenger side airbag that involved replacing the whole top part of the dash, sliding out the centre console etc, so I'm quite aufait with the removal so that won't be an issue.

Does the car need to be jacked up or any parts removed from the engine to be able to to strip the loom out?

The first thing I need to know is the extent of the loom being replaced.
As I said the main loom goes over the top and right to the front both sides and through the bulkhead both sides.
You will need to jack up the front end, remove the two front wheels in order to remove the inner wing liners as the loom sits behind the.
You will need to remove the headlights grill and front bumper.. Also the wiper blades and the panel below. The loom serves the Airflow metres, the preheater, the washer bottle, the air temp sensor at the front, the wipers, the washers on the bonnet and under the dash connects to the suspension ecu, anti roll ecu, Speed ecu the fuse box.
To get the old loom out I started with a pair of cutters retaining the earthing connections until I was read to reconnect the new loom.
I had the benefit also of having the donor car and stripped out the old loom. When I refitted all connectors were sprayed with contact cleaner and allowed to dry before plugged back together.
I have still to get my car running and will be changing the gearbox ecu over the weekend but my car suffered fire damage and needed the replacement of all ecu's and some of the engine components.

As a former auto electrician from what you’ve described I can imagine the damage to be very localised so I would of thought a repair would be possible or if the damaged section is a spur cut it from a second hand loom and slice it in. Steve
