4WD alone isn't as good as winter tyres.

We all know this, of course, but it's worth repeating as we get towards possible winter weather - 4WD on summer tyres isn't as good as using winter tyres. A 2WD with winter tyres is going to be a better place to be than your nice shiny 4wd on summer tyres if it snows.

A nice comparison of 2WD + winter tyres vs. 4WD + summer tyres here:

So if it snows and you're one of the many RRS owners that fit "ordinary" tyres to your vehicle, remember that you're possibly going to struggle and take extra care. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Whilst you'd expect the winter tyres to be better, the scale of the difference is amazing. A salutatory lesson! Robin

I fitted winter tyres for the first time ever last year, and the difference was unbelievable.

The week before I had slid down a single track road towards its junction with the A9, and nearly came a cropper. The HDC was trying hard but had no effect. Previously owned 1999 Disco 2 TD5

I remember a video with Ford Kuga, 2WD and 4WD, going up an indoor ski sloop.
Same message, the 4WD on summer tyres got further than the 2WD but slid all the way back down so, in my view, a worse outcome. 2010 HSE TdV8 in Stornoway Grey.

Yes, the 2WD Kuga on winters got most of the way up, the 4WD on winters got all the way up. The two on summer tyres didn't do much different other than the 4wd getting a bit further before failing and sliding back.

Winter tyres are the best option for any car, 2WD or 4WD. The new breed of winter rated AT and "winter rated summer tyres" blur the distinction a good deal. Of the latter type, the Michelin CrossClimate 2 is very impressive, being nearly as good a full winter tyre in many tests, whilst still doing a very good job the rest of the year too. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

My understanding is that at least a part of the reasons for Winter Tyres working is the "sipes" that are built into the tyre - forgive me if I'm preaching to the converted. I believe that the way they work is that, just like when building a snow ball, the snow which gets stuck in the sipes grabs the snow on the road and improves the grip of the tyre on snow. So I am not too sure how they work on say ice, or just cold wet roads. I guess there may well be other elements of the tyre construction which also help with grip. However, dealing with just the sipes, if you regularly get snow then it may well be worth investing in winter tyres. Here in the South East in practice we don't get much snow (famous last words) and so having considered winter tyres, I have now so far not taken the plunge and bought any. If there's other information that might influence that decision, maybe someone could enlighten me. Robin

Winters (in my experience, anyway) have significantly more grip in cold, wet and icy conditions - not just snowy.

They use much softer compounds than summer tyres, which heat up much more quickly (also due to the sipes and relatively 'tall, skinny' tread blocks - much like a M&S tyre, which gives them much better grip in the cold.
Deeper tread patterns also work better in standing water etc.
I can't explain why they grip better on ice other than the softer compound, but of course they don't grip anything like a studded tyre (which we don't get over here at all) 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Don’t forget to check with your insurer. Somebody mentioned it on the Disco3 site as theirs was classed as a modification. I’m with Admiral and they said it’s not a modification. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Grabber AT3 is winter rated - it has the 3pmsf symbol. It's worth noting that it won't be as good as a pure road winter tyre because it doesn't have the sipe density nor is the compound as soft - it has to be robust enough for off road work after all.

Having said that, I found the AT3 to be pretty good in snowy conditions - never got stuck, no nasty moments. But not so good in conditions where the surface is icy but that is to be expected as the tyre is just not as optimised for such conditions as a pure winter road tyre would be. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

"Mud and snow" is fairly meaningless. It's a US manufacturer thing which just means it has larger spaces between tread blocks than a normal tyre might.

A winter tyre will carry the M&S mark but not all M&S marked tyres are winter rated.

Best to ignore the M&S mark as it's not really helpful. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
