Gearbox , diffs and transfer box oil service

Hi All, my searches havent found anything specific - sorry if this has been covered,

My rrs is almost 10 years old with 75K (8 speed) im planning to change my diffs and tranny fluids (ooooeeer) and the gearbox too.

I have been reading about flushing but I have no issues and I spoke to my local ZF agent and he said if there are no issues currently then avoid a flush, infact dont even change the oil. Im not comfortable with that as surely even a partial oil change has to be better than nothing.

is there a DIY guide on filling? Draining is easy lol, but filling I cant see how to do it, plus does it need to be done at a 40C temp?

If your planning on keeping the car for a while why not bite the bullet and just get a gearbox flush,,,, better than faffing on with partial changes. An indie could do all your diffs etc in no time, hardly worth the trouble doing it yourself,, by the time you get the correct oil, and scramble about underneath you'll probably not really save yourself very much 2010 RRS, TDV8

Thanks, thats the route I was going to go but ZF told me to avoid flushing if there are no problems currently as this could introduce issues, He told me that flushing is a last resort if you are having problems and a partial fluid change doesnt cure it.

Strange that the ZF agent would be against changing the gearbox oil. The manufacturer themselves say the oil should be changed.

At 10 year old / 75k miles, I'd be changing the gearbox oil. In fact I did get mine done around that mileage. And I'll probably get it done again at the next service, I think, which will be around 125k miles in a couple of months. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Thanks for that, did you flush it or get the oil dropped and refilled? did you recall the oil condition at 75K?

I had it flushed by my indie. No idea what the old oil was like, sorry. But I did have my old TDV8 flushed on my driveway by a forum member, Geoff, several years ago. That oil was pretty dark compared to the new stuff, so I would guess the oil will be quite dark in all gearboxes that have done 70k miles. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

If you wait until your having issues to get a flush,,,, as ZF have suggested,,,, I would say it's already to late. Prevention is the key. 2010 RRS, TDV8

Indeed prevention is better than cure. How can clean oil not be a good thing. Just in a flush more than a full oil change? I.e does is just change all the oil or does it blast the internals?

The flush just pumps fluid around. There is no "blasting" really.

It has been said that a normal double change is enough to ensure the additive pack in the oil is topped up. It's the additives that you're interested in - the oil is a just a carrier for those (as well as doing general lubricating, of course). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

As others have said, ZF recommend lower mileage or age intervals than LR so no idea what Censored you’ve been told.
At the age and mileage of your gearbox it’s bang on due an oil change

As you asked about DIY...

The 8 speed has a thermostatic valve between the gearbox and cooler so this needs to be bypassed to perform a full 'flush'.

Repeated drops and refills are perfectly fine to renew the fluid though. I did a quadrouple drop and refill on the 8 speed in my L405. Samples of the fluid are pictured below. Fresh oil is shown at the top. First drain is on the left and fourth drain is on the right. Obviously the oil in the gearbox at the end would have been a shade lighter than the one shown on the right

Dropping the oil is via the plug on base of the pan and filling it is via the fill port on the side. The use of a little electric pump makes filling easy peasy!

Here's the procedure...
1. Take the car for a drive to warm up gearbox
2. Remove fill plug (8mm hex)
3. Remove drain plug (10mm hex)
4. Inspect, clean and refit drain plug - tighten to 8 Nm
5. Refill gearbox until a trickle comes from the fill port
6. Start engine
7. Refill gearbox until a trickle comes from the fill port again
8. Replace fill plug
9. Hold foot on brake
10. Put in reverse for 5 seconds
11. Put in drive for 5 seconds
12. Put in 2nd gear using paddle, for 5 seconds
13. Put in neutral
14. Throttle to 2000 rpm for at least 30 seconds to fill torque converter
15. Put in park
16. Repeat steps 3 to 15 if doing more than one fluid change
17. Let engine idle
18. Wait until gearbox oil temperature exceeds 69 degrees C (ie. thermostat starts to open)
19. Turn off engine
20. Wait for gearbox oil temperature to descend to 30 degrees C (a few hours)
21. Start engine
22. Ensure gearbox oil temperature is equal to or a little greater than 30 degrees C
23. Remove fill plug (8mm hex)
24. Refill gearbox until a trickle comes from the fill port
25. Replace fill plug and torque to 35 Nm

I always buy my ATF from these guys because their prices are excellent. 20 litres of Mannol AG60 was £72 when I bought mine last year, including delivery. https://www.motor-oel-guenstig.de/

I had about 8 litres left over so I may do another couple of drops and refills at at some point.

If you want to do the transfer box, it's a simple drain and refill also, just like the diffs. Kev
