Anyone driven the new D300 yet?

Has anyone driven the new D300 yet? How does it compare to the SDV6? Looking at the stats it seems to have slightly less bhp and torque compared to the older engines...

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

The D300 is a MHEV and the electric motor makes up for a lot, and removes the typical pause on pull away apparently. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I have driven the D300 two weeks ago
I can't tell you how it is compared to the SDV6 (I had the SDV6 with 306hp).
The car had only 30km on the clock, do I didn't push it
It is very, very quite! What is also very nice: you push a little bit the pedal, and it accelerates immediately.

I ordered a HST D350 this Wednesday... Range Rover Sport HST D350

Would be interesting to see if the nee straight 6 diesel suffers from oil dilution.

Onecwould think lessons have been learnt and the dpf is better more suitably located ie close exhaust gas outlet mext to engine rather than half down the car.

Have a RR Velar D180 2lt diesel...follows same kourney pattern as my sport and not once had dpf full msg and service Indicator came up bang on time..2 year mark...

And no issues with stop start either..never switched off...kicks in most times even with lots of short journies.


You can see the dpf in engine bay next engine block.

Time will show. I suppose that JLR has learned from the SDV6 engine and has built a great engine. That's why I put the order without thinking twice...

One thing, which indicates, that JLR has thought about oil dilution is the fact, that the motor oil volume is 8.8l (instead 5.9l) Range Rover Sport HST D350

I have covered 1500 miles in my D300 Autobiography which replaced a MY18 SDV6 autobiography so can tell you my personal findings.

- D300 sounds better, little bit more noise overall, hard to describe but has a whine which is quite satisfying. Maybe this is from the MHEV?
- D300 picks up much better off the line, feels more like my wife’s Evoque in that sense. I wasn’t alone in hating the way the SDV6 lagged off the line, some quite scary moments pulling away from roundabouts and junctions and my wife called it the ‘truck’ because of this, she didn’t like driving it at all
- fuel economy better, taking figures from the app, i am averaging 3-4 mpg more so far, that’s with mixed driving but no motorway cruising yet due to Covid
- now I’ve covered a decent mileage it is definitely as fast if not quicker, you don’t notice the small BHP or torque loss at all

The dealer did reckon the ‘lump’ was lighter, i can only say i agree as there is a tad more understeer with this car, now that may be down to less weight over the front or the switch from the older style Pirelli tyres which were on my last car and may have been a softer compound as most newer tyres seem to be harder due to new regulations

No not because of squeal.

For some reason (cost!) Land Rover decided to change both the size of front calliper and discs on the MY18 SDV6 models, dropping the 6 pot calipers made by Brembo and replacing with a simple 2 pot design. They also changed the manufacturer of the discs and made them smaller in size, not good on a circa 2.5 tonne car IMO!

In 30,000 miles i successfully claimed under warranty on 2 occasions to have all 4 corners replaced due to warping and vibration through the pedal. They tried to bring in a new pad compound to solve it but that didn’t work either.

I believe RRSman had a similar problem with warping brakes on his?

They have now reverted back to bigger discs and also bigger 6 pot calipers on my D300, these are silver in colour and not Brembo branded but so much better than the last ones and will be able to cope with the heat and loads on them much better. I get to ‘enjoy’ braking again Very Happy

I believe that the D300 and D350 are the same engine, but in different states of tune. If that’s true, then I suspect there will be quite a growth in businesses remapping the D300 to the more powerful variant. The price premium between the 2 is quite significant in Australia - around $10K(?) - making remapping an attractive option. MY21.5 HSE 221KW D16

that's interesting. do you have somewhere something official regarding the 6 pot calipers?
the brake on my MY16 (Brembo) was amazing (ok, the squeal not..)

last week I ordered a HST D350 - I compared with a HSE Dynamic D300 and it comes more expensive if I put the options into it, which are already covered by the HST trim. For example: two speed gearbox, torque vectoring including the dynamic mode, cooled and heated frontseats, panoramic sunroof, Meridian surround sound system, driver assisting package 1 etc.
(attention: that means here in Switzerland. I don't know how the packages are build in other countries)

I wanted the D350 and reading the specs I decided to go with HST - it's an amazing package Range Rover Sport HST D350

@harisson - nothing official mentioned about the brakes, the configurator shows them behind the wheels, then the sales manager sent me a pic of their 1st D300 model at the end of last year to confirm.

Very happy with them now

Just checked on the configurator and the D350 comes with red 6 pot calipers with ‘Land Rover’ branding.

The packaging is quite different between countries. The HST is not available in Australia. The hi/low ratio gearbox is standard on the HSE. Some of what you listed is included in the HSE Dynamic, eg torque vectoring, and some (eg sunroof) are options even on the HSE Dynamic. The HSE Dynamic, with the D350, is about $25K more than the HSE. MY21.5 HSE 221KW D16
