Just wondering about your thoughts on my newly purchased range rover.

The guy told me the engine was perfect but after a week I notice the drive has spots of oil and the underside near the sump is covered in oil. 🙄

Typical, I always buy cars with problems, maybe I'm just nieve, but anway I'm always in the garage a week after buying a new car so hey ho, they see me comming. 😂

The car is at 150k and shows no evidence of a cambelt / waterpump change so made enquiries about that and to book it it to be checked for the oil leak and quote for fixing.

After 5 mins looking underneath the guy said I have X2 oil leaks one from the cam shaft seal and the other rocker cover gasket.

Daaaam 🙄🙄🤔 when it rains it pours,😂

He said if I'm changing the cambelt and waterpump it's only an extra £50 to do the seal, but another £250 to do the rocker cover gasket.

So looking at total cost of £800 to change the cambelt, waterpump, camshaft seal and rocker cover gasket.

My question is, do you think this is fair, and do I need all this work done if its only dripping slowly from them both? He seemed to diagnose the leaks super quick considering he only looked underneath for a bit, Christmas is comming up and it's a lot of money. He said he can have it all done in a day if I drop it off at 10am.

As it seems I'm always scammed, on buying cars and repairing cars perhaps it's the same again. I just have no confidence anymore maybe guys with experience here can help me out. Or mechincics near leiceste, perhaps I can throw your some money to get a second opinion.

If you are doing cambelt and water pump etc. I think you might find some members will recommend you do oil pump at same time if you're going that far as a precaution, especially as you don't really know any history of the car.

It sounds fair. Cam cover is quite a lot of work on these.

You could do the cheap seal. And see how bad it is after this.

Or investigate yourself.

The cam belt cover does need loosening to do the cam cover, but it’s not too much extra work.
I’m not convinced cam cover leaks can Be fixed fully on these

As col says. A 2006 with 150K really needs an oil pump replacement if its never been changed before. (There is an old weak type and a new strengthed type)
Far more important to do this rather than change the water pump.

Oil pump about £150 + labour
Needs doing at the same time as cambelt

Did you buy this from a garage or a private individual? If a garage, then tell him to fix it at his expense or give you your money back. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
