Just had THE most disturbing news this morning regarding our beloved Sport!

PLEASE BEAR WITH ME ON THIS ONE!

The immigration laws in Cyrpus are THE most ridiculous in Europe. Despite being an EU member state for a few years now, they continue to insist on doing things their way.

As an EU citizen, you should be entitled to freedom of movement within other member states. The application process to become a resident here is long winded and they scrutinise lots of things.

The first stage in the process, you receive an 'ALIEN CARD' (Yes really! )

This means you have been successful, however due to their inefficiency it will take up to 2 years to get your official residency papers through.

We have our Alien cards. Therefore, we are residents of Cyprus. Easy? NO!

In order to bring the car over, we now have had to go through another process called 'Transfer of permanent residency to Republic of Cyprus'................Please, stick with me!

This means that despite now being residents of Cyprus, we had to provide the following:

Proof of sale of house(s) in UK
6 months worth of UK bank statements, water bills, council tax, gas, electricity, telephone etc.
6 months worth of Cyprus bank accounts, telephone bills, electricity bills
Deed of purchase of house in Cyprus
Private medical insurance certificates
Registration document for car
Min 6 months UK insurance for car + Cyprus insurance
Ferry docket proving date of import to R.O.Cyprus

The list goes on!

Provided all of the above and got a phone call from our representative (Easier to pay a Cypriot to do it!) to say they are contesting car as it was not used in UK for a full 6 months prior to entering R.O.C.

But we didn't ship it here from UK, we drove as far as Greece and shipped it the rest of the way.

IT HAS BEEN USED OUTSIDE R.O.C FOR OVER 6 MONTHS!

We have until end of May to either:

Produce tickets for car being shipped from Greece (4th Sep) to Cyprus (Which we don't have as none were issued - remember the story about the dodgy docks in Athens + no paperwork?)

Pay CY£10,960 (GBP£13,700) duty on the car

OR

Talk about bureaucracy! Why should it make an iota of difference whether you used it for 6 months in the UK or not? And you wouldn't be able to sell it in Cyprus then?

Bad news mate... you must be going mental over this.

But then, you do get to look at boobies all day long the sympathy tap can only run for so long

Seriously though mate - what are you planning to do?

We are trying the route of:

'6 months outside Cyprus as we drove it here'

Vs. their

'6 months in the UK before bringing it to Cyprus'

If we cannot resolve it, we have to either ship it back to UK and sell it there,

We may be able to sell it here and pay the duty on it (We would actually be quids in this way!)

Pay the duty and keep the car.

If we sell it here and pay the duty, bear in mind the following:

Cost to buy Sport HSE TDV6, including all taxes and duties is c. CYP£75k (c. GBP£91k!)

Subtract duty of CYP£10,960 and base price is c. CYP£64k (GBP£78k)

Allow for depreciation and that it is a UK car with mph clocks...............

To recoup what we paid for it we would only need to sell it for (Excl. duty) c. CYP£39,000 (GBP£48,000)

Realistically, we could probably sell it for CYP£50k (GBP£61k) and be quids in.

But what do we buy to replace it?

Couldn't drive around in a pick up, no matter how good the Navara was at Motorshow!

All the E-Class Mercs here are 200K's

All the 5's over here are 520i's

If we have no other option, maybe it's worth slumming it in a Navara for 12-18months and invest the cash offshore with the rest of our loot and reap the benefits at a later date...........

Has to be 6 continuous months!

I think i will speak to our solicitor and see if Cypriot customs are in breach of any EU laws.

Surely this can't be right!
