Also - my audi dealer said " it costs them 2k to turn a car around = minimum " so if they are offering £38k + 2k costs .... what they can sell it for above this is their proffit Confused

I'm sure the "average" car needs a touch of paint on the bumper, a few dings ironed out, couple of scuffed wheels refurbished, and a good valet. Advertising may cost a few quid.., but £2k??? Hmm! Whistle MY12 SDV6 HSE Sumatra/Ebony/Piano/Sidesteps/Privacy/Overfinch Olympus/JLR DRLs

Then add in the cost of running the dealership - rates/wages/rent etc etc etc

Oh sure MDP, yes, I fully understand that, being a businessman myself. But most of those costs are fairly fixed week-to-week and dont specifically relate to your particular car. In other words, those overheads wont vary whether they sell 1 or 101 cars that week, so it would be a little disingenuous for that dealers to use that as exhoneration. To me, it's a straight margin issue, £4-5k, which you can put in your own back pocket with minimal effort ? Cool MY12 SDV6 HSE Sumatra/Ebony/Piano/Sidesteps/Privacy/Overfinch Olympus/JLR DRLs

There is a certain Leicestershire LR dealer that has gone the route of small margin = large numbers and they do quite well on it. They are not so good on new car prices though.

There you go Cliff, they dont need a £4-5k margin per car, nor clearly incur £2k in prep costs as they suggest. Whistle

The trouble with dealers is that they give way below market value to buy your car, then charge top dollar at resale. That's greed in my books. If they gave a fair price for your old car, then sold it on again at realistic market value, we wouldn't deny them a modest profit, would we? Why don't you get a Glass valuation on line for £3.50. Which is the guide the Stealer will probably use for his valuation.
Then you can shove the Glass valuation under his nose and prove whether he is ripping you off or not.

Or eg. I have just done one on mine, which may be specc'd higher than yours with 13K miles.....

Trade in below average condition ........£31,750
Trade in Average................................£36,000
Trade in excellent...............................£41,000
Private sale........................................£38,250 TDV6 - gone
TDV8 - gone
