Engine Broke

Well after 28 months and 22k miles I need a new Engine (2018 SDV6 HSE Dynamic), full LR Service, driven long/short journeys and never thrashed

Symptoms; juddering under acceleration, reduced performance and rough idle. AA found a fault code (Nox sensor) and it went off to the dealer (I drove 4 miles as the engine was not seized). They found metal bits in the engine oil and will be replacing the engine assembly and components.

I have a loaner AB so happy with that. Not happy with keeping the vehicle once the PCP runs out, will definitely be parting ways, such a shame as the RRS is such a competent and comfortable car.

How can LR be making any money on these cars based on the awful reliability of the most popular engine ?

Because the reality is that there aren't huge numbers of engines failing. We hear about them in the forum because people come here to discuss and moan about problems. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Fair enough, not had an engine go before, luckily it’s covered by Warranty

Sorry to hear of this. It's been going on for years with this engine. Even back when it was in it's original form of the 2.7

Did they give you any further diagnosis? I assume it's a spun bearing?

But yes, as above, compared to the thousands of T/SDV6s on the road, the likelihood is slim. It's just unfortunate and an expensive job when it does happen.

It's good you have a warranty - I wasn't so fortunate when it happened to me. Kev

I'll find out more when the repair is complete, sounded like a bag of spanners

Update; replacement engine now fitted (had to wait about 3 weeks for parts). I couldn’t get an answer to what the failure was, the engine is sent back to LR for ‘analysis’

All is fine (albeit I had to clean up the engine cover and bay as it was left in a mess).

Took a 350 mile trip to Liverpool for an Anfield stadium tour, the RRS was a pleasure to drive again, and sat comfortably with the ac in auto for 40 mins in 35degree heat while the M6 was closed due to inevitable accident.

Just had exactly the same happen to my 2018 HSE. Metal in the oil. Engine seized. OUt of warranty so am awaiting news on whether JLR will make a goodwill gesture for the £18k worth or parts and labour required.

Back when I had a Td5 Disco, the engine went, oil sump issue, which was a known fault.
LR wouldn’t do anything without an inspection to prove the fault. The dealer quoted me £1k to take the engine out, inspect it and put it back. I told them to inspect it and then stick it in the boot as there was no point putting it back. As soon as they told LR, they agreed to meet half the costs, for parts and half the labour (at their rate not the dealers).
To be fair the dealer went over everything and replaced lots that was due soon, including the major service items and stuck it on LR bill.
Hope it gets sorted for you.

As one or two have mentioned, you seem to hear a lot of times when the 3ltr V6 engine let's go but in reality apparently it's not so common. I once asked the guys who service mine about this while I was waiting. These only service the landrover brand and really know their stuff,, and I was suprised when he said they had never come across a failed 3l V6. Apparently more common was the 2.7,, people not bothering with services or even keeping the oil topped up. 2010 RRS, TDV8
