Hi all,

New to this forum.

I have a 2015 RRS and decided to fit sidesteps, purchased from Powerful UK.

Managed to fit the offside after taking the sill cover and under carriage /cover off, then tapped the holes for the M10 bolts.

Only had to cut small bits from under cover and all went back well albeit fiddly for a 68 year old crawling around on the driveway.

Planning on doing the nearside but was wondering if the bits can be cut whilst the under cover is in situ, therefore not having to take off the under cover or the sill cover. Obviously some holes would have to be cut/drilled to allow the tapping of the holes, 3 in all as the other 4 are exposed, for the brackets.

Question is, has anyone done this already?

I’ve never removed any covers when I’ve fitted them before 3x,I’ve cut the covers in situ,just watch the fuel lines on the near side ,What do you mean by tapping the holes for the studs,the holes are already there to fit them. Andy.

I did remove the covers never having done it before, just needed to get some new clips for wheel arches and covers Joined the X5 45e club

Hi Andy,

On the later Sports, the holes are not tapped for the brackets.

I would have thought they had them to make steps easier to fit.Mines a my15 & the holes were there when I fitted my steps Andy.

I wouldn’t have thought they stopped putting the holes there on any model even the newer my18 onwards are basically the same car apart from the shape of a few panels,I had a my18 newer shape in deployable steps bolted the same way as my fixed steps. Andy.

The holes for the bolts are there but not threaded.

I was told this by the the company that sold me the steps.

Andy, did you put the bracket in place to mark out where to cut?

Yes put the bracket up to the plastic trim,Mark with white marker & I cit with a 2” cutter.Are you sure the holes aren’t threaded.?seems weird them not being. Andy.

Wow, I did do it the hard way.

Yes definitely not threaded, had to buy a tap and cut new threads.

That will be fine as it’s only cutting plastic,I used a 2”cutting wheel as that’s what I use at work & it works off air.Just watch the fuel lines on the near side,I unfastened a few clips & pulled the plastic down so I didn’t cut fuel lines. Andy.

I did think of dropping the cover a bit after you mentioned the fuel lines, greatly appreciated.

IIRC on the L320 for example the powerful guys in their fitting guide recommend using a tap to clean up the threads in the existing holes so maybe that's what they're referring to? 2010 TDV8 - current - my first RRS, loving it so far......

1995 Disco TDI- surprisingly reliable, shame about the peeling dash & other trim
Lots of other non 4X4's in between times.........

That’s true seatown,best thing is spray holes with wd40 then run the bolts in & out to clean them up if you haven’t got a tap.But to be honest the L494 ones are usually ok as the are covered & don’t get much dirt ect on them like the L320’s do. Andy.
