Removing dashboard

Hi

I need to change my passenger airbag as the car was involved in an accident.

I spent all day today removing everything I could trying to figure out how it's done and its just so difficult. Here is how it currently looks (minus the CD drive)

I'm at a point now where I'm stuck I dont know what the next stage is. What else has to come out before I can take the top dashboard off and put the new one in?

I also considered leaving the dashboard on and sort of taping the top down and just changing the airbag from underneath, so I removed the bolts holding it in but it doesnt seem to come out as it is too big for the gap.

Has anyone been through this pain and could help me out?

I would have thought you would need to unbolt the center console and slide it back . (there are some screws in the rear footwell at the side under square covers)
Also need to unbolt the gear selector and the thing is stands on

I had to do this just to change the glovebox surround Rolling Eyes

I have done one of these some time ago, certainly never moved the lower part of the console, the reason I know is I never even removed the top part with the gearshift in it and it was a right pain, so actualy removed that bit to refit new dash but have a vague recollection I had to remove the CD player as well as there are four torx screws in that area that have to be taken out, which is where the pain bit was because I though I would be clever (bad mistake) and do it without removing top console, so you can remove a support frame there that locates on some aluminium and plastic dowels, may be wrong it was a long time ago.

Cheers

I did one last year to replace a loom and we had to have the steering wheel and trim off, the little trims at the base of the A pillar, the centre speaker grill, glove box out etc.

Glad I didn't have to take all that lot out, but then I only changed the top cover, forgot all about those screws hidden under the little vent trims by the "A" post but it was around 5 years ago. Very Happy

Cheers

Managed to get it all off and replaced the top cover and back within 2 days. It was much harder than expected though

Yeah it’s a big job, it took 2 of us 12 hours continues to take the dash and console out, replace the dash loom and ICE loom and refit and then edit the CCF. We had nothing left over but we did miss one plug for indicators which the other lad sorted in the morning after I said....remember that grey plug I wrapped in foam. 2012 5.0 SC AB

That happens an awful lot but luckily we test after refitting and anything not connected would show up as a fail in the test. If you can’t test something i.e. an ejection seat (let’s face it, only an idiot would try and test one) then we would do an Independent Check. That’s when a Sgt or above who has had nothing to do with the job checks everything with a fresh set of eyes. It’s a good system but a lot of responsibility for the Independent Inspector. 2012 5.0 SC AB

An interesting incident reported today. I work fast jets so a bit smaller than the Atlas shown here.

Can't see the problem, roll of "black nasty" will fix that, that's what they used to use to hold the old tristar's and herc's together. Laughing

I'm sure I remember that pressure being the cause of at least one suicide while my Dad was serving - definitely not the kind of pressure I'd want! A friend of mine is civvie aircraft maintenance (until BA go under, I suppose!) and has sign-off responsibilities, including for pre-delivery inspection of airframes ... Censored that responsibility on his salary! 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

I’m an independent inspector and I quite enjoy it. If I see something I don’t like then I have someone fix it. I’d say 90% of the engineers won’t complain because they understand the responsibility that person holds. I also used to train and examine armourers on Ejection Seat installation and I always tried to get across the need to be tidy and consistent. A lot of the inspectors confidence in someone’s job is gained by the presentation.

Ive failed that many inspections on another Sqn that they won’t ask me to do them now. That doesn’t bother me as I know I do everything correctly + a bit more 2012 5.0 SC AB
