All done by 18.00pm!
Test drove (shopping trip to Asda!) and all seems fine.
Much easier than i anticipated BUT!!! i didn't have to strip the spider and ball bearing race down. I literally opened the locking clip and tugged the two shafts apart, cleaned up, removed centre bearing, cleaned up again, fit new bearing, pushed other half of shaft back in taking care to use alignment marks, re-packed with grease then tapped tin shroud back on. The shroud was still a nice tight fit over the 'o' ring and i carefully peined the end over into the slight recess. Just to be doubly sure, i smeared a bead of construction sealant into the groove and cleaned excess off.
Ok, i am happy now and would recommend anybody else who has a sound propshaft and knackered centre bearing to have a go and change it themselves (obviously, health and mobility and technical ability come into it but if you are able to and want to save a few quid, have a go. I was apprehensive regarding stripping the prop but it was in my case, only a matter of splitting it.
I am happy anyway! Thanks to all who posted great advice!
