RRS 3.6l vs facelifted 3.0l

Hello there, i am about to buy mi first RRS but still cant find any good tips which one should be better.

So i am about ->
2008-2009 TDV8 RRS 3.6l
2010-2011 TDV6 RRS 3.0l

so is there any know repeating issues with 3.0l engine? my mechanic told me that 3.6l is still better even its older and there are many issues with crankshaft with mileage about 160000km+ (100k miles) + there is very bad situated oil filter any many repair shops just change oil without filter. I would go straight to 3.6l because its V8 tho but i just dont like the interior in older RRS and there is no facelift RRS 3.6l available for like 5-6months and if yes its cost fortune

so if is there any standard pros and cons on TDV6 3.0l versus TDV8 3.6l

thanks a lot!

I haven't heard of the filter problem. but yes the 3.0 engine has issues.
I would go for the 3,6, but be sure the turbo's are ok and replacement is a lot of labour

Having had both, I'd say 3.6TDV8 every day. It's just such a good motor. The interior is a question of personal taste. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

V6 - spun bearings and crank problems, generally low likelihood compared to the amount of vehicles on the road, but it does happen. I had it happen to me.

As for the filter being in an awkward place, that is completely untrue. It's at the top of the engine in the V. Dead easy to get to and replace.

V8 - turbo issues around the 100k mark. Expensive to replace. Great engine though.

Concerning the interior, in my opinion, the MY2010 facelift was a game changer for the Sport. Kev

The problem with the oil filter is not the location so much as it is possible to put it in incorrectly and still fit the cover, I believe. Doing so is, of course, quickly terminal for the engine.

The interior is a personal thing. Having had both, I can see benefits in both designs. The later is a cleaner look but I'm not convinced it's as practical. Certainly there seemed to be slightly less storage in the facelift.

I prefer the seats on the TDV8 to the perforated, variable bolster units on my SDV6. There's not much in it but on a long trip I found the earlier design a bit more comfortable. I don't see the point of the perforated leather in the facelift. It just gets stuff in the holes and looks dirty. Again, small differences that won't be an issue unless you've had both. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

thank you all!

1, dont you think that biggest issue should be to sell it in like 3-4years - i mean that TDV8 from 2008...? 16yrs old car

2, i am not sure here but is TDV6 euro5? i think there will be issues to some towns in Germany to enter it with TDV8

3, @knwatkins could you please tell me what happend to your engine and how much is it cost to repair?

4, so there is no common issues with turbo around 100k mileage with TDV6? (better oil pump or turbo cooling/oil system?)

5, is there any difference in TDV8 from 2007 to 2009?

thanks a lot for any answers Smile

If you like the updated RRS - the TDV8 was also available in the later version (2010/11) for a while alongside the 3.0 SDV6.

Hi,
I was in the same position as you about a month ago and my research showed to me that the TDV8 was the best option and I gotta say, it is a dream to drive, so smooth.
The interior is quite luxurious, I also went for the facelift 2010 model and it had the turbos replaced.
Got a couple of electrical issues on colder mornings, like unlock it and it says “tailgate open” sometime will pop up with “air bag fault” but goes away if you stop it and start it again, I can live with that.
The trip counter seems to reset itself at the end of every journey, research also indicates that the battery maybe slightly week and need replacing soon.
At the end of the day, the engine was smooth, the gearbox was smooth too, the air suspension went up and down no probs and there were no knocks over speed humps or pot holes.
Fuel is between 20-25 mpg for average driving, but I tell ya the cost of fuel doesn’t matter in return for the smooth drive ahead of you 😊
Hope you pick a good one 😊and happy hunting

Matt IIRC (it’s a while since I owned an L320 RRS) you can set the trips (there is a trip A and a trip B) to automatically reset At the end of each journey in the info screen settings. I used to have trip A set to auto reset and the trip B to be what I thought would be the life time for mpg - that was until the car went for its first service and they disconnected the battery to do a software upgrade and both trips were reset......... the L322 FFRR had the same facility too 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I assume 20-25 MPG isn’t on a long motorway run?! Might as well get the 5.0 Exclamation

I've had my TDV8 for 4 years now and overall I get 25.1 mpg. On a couple of runs to Scotland from Sussex 2016 (1390 miles and 1885 miles) I've got 26.15mpg and 27.23mpg respectively. That obviously includes both motorway, on the way up and back, and local roads in Scotland.
Its had its share of expensive items in the first years of ownership but in the last year or so, it has been very well behaved. As Ilard said the better looked after the better the chance of trouble free motoring Robin

Depends how many miles you do. If it's a weekend vehicle, not used for commuting etc., then the petrol is the better option.

If you're doing 20k miles a year, the 10mpg difference between the S/C and the TDV8 is going to add up... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Quite right. And my spreadsheet tells me that, on my 9000 miles or so each year, if I had a car that averaged just 15 mpg it'd have cost me an extra £148 per month in fuel. Robin
