Puncture repair kit instead of spare?

The spare wheel takes a lot of room. It's been ages since I've had to use a spare. So I'm thinking of replacing the spare with a puncture repair kit so I can store some other stuff under there.

I'm assuming that a PRK is an OEM option. Any experience of this swap or other thoughts?

I think its madness to do away with a spare, you only need something a little more than a simple screw and the gunk isn't going to work. What if that happens in the middle of no where or a motorway, you just going to wait for recovery rather than just a wheel change. Using the gunk makes it more difficult for repairing/replacing your tyre as well.

We actually went the other way with SWMBOs car and bought a spare. Joined the X5 45e club

Thanks for your views. I read Lindab's post.

Accepted it's down to your own assessment of probability & how adverse the outcomes are. For me, over the last ten years -ish = 150,000 miles I've never needed to use a spare - although I have used the portable compressor to top up until I could get to the tyre repair place. And that was without the early warning of TPMS.

If I'm on the motorway I'm definitely not changing a wheel. And there's not many middle-of-nowheres in the English Midlands. Will be a different risk assessment on that next trip to the NW Highlands with grandchildren though...

I personally am more comfortable having a spare, but my wife's Evoque doesn't have one and I've never thought too much about it.

You could always take it out when in your comfort zone, as long as you keep hold of your spare then you can always put it back in when going to the wilds of NW Highlands... 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

Even simple things become difficult without, I am getting a wheel refurbed on wheel and tyre insurance, I can leave with them for two days quite easily Joined the X5 45e club

Its the getting the spare out & lifting it back in that's the problem. How many of you have actually tried using the strap thing on your own? Big Cry Suggest you give it a go in your own drive rather than when you actually need it. Take the wheel right out rather than just suspending it in the air

Hi,
it is a heavy beast, I have removed ours from the well a couple of times and found it as easy to lift out rather than using the strap, just dont wear anything too nice and hug it like you love it Laughing
potential for some dirty clothes is better than potential for a painful back.

Personally I would rather have a full size spare

As the Range Rover is supposed to be the best Off Road vehicle it make no sense not to have a spare. The reason I had the RRS on my short list was because it had a full size spare. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.

I got a puncture in ours within a mile of getting off the ferry in France.

Long story short but it wasn’t repairable and they couldn’t source tyres for almost a week. I was thankful for the space saver as we ended up doing about 500 miles on it.

If anything I’d say get a full size spare rather than do away with the space saver. TDV8 RRS HST in Java - Gone

Personally I wouldn't have any car that didn't have a spare wheel , just seems daft that so many manufacturers supply new vehicles without one .
