Wheel and tyre question

Hi All,

I currently have 275/40 R20 wheels and tyres fitted to the car. My questions are -

Are there any steel wheels available which I cold fit which would then enable me to fit a tyre with a large side wall and use for mud plugging? If so, what are the tyre options? What does everyone feel is a good off road tyre? I've read a lot about the Grabber AT3. Thoughts?

In relation to alloys, what are the smallest rims I could fit? I am thinking of getting a winter wheel/ tyre combo to put on when the temperature drops. I would be using them for tarmac/ on road use especially in the snow so tyre suggestions would also be good!

Thanks.

What do you mean by "mud plugging"? A bit of green lane type stuff or more adventurous axle deep mud? If the former, then the AT3 will be very good. If the latter, then you'll want a dedicated MT type. I'm not sure there's much in the way of MT in the UK in sizes that fit the RRS.

The AT3 will get you around most stuff, to be fair. It's available in 275/40/20.

The smallest rim you can fit to your RRS is 18 inch and that's a specialist aftermarket wheel by Compomotive, the PD1881. That would allow fitting of the BFG ALL TERRAIN T/A KO2 which is probably the best tyre you could fit for off road work.

I run 19 inch rims with 255/55/19 fitted. Have done for a number of years. I have used the AT3 in that size and they're good. I've currently got Pirelli AT+ fitted - just to see what they're like, to be honest - but I think I might go back to the AT3 again.

For winter road use, pick from one of the premium manufacturers and you shouldn't go too far wrong.

I'd be tempted to just run Michelin CrossClimate SUV all year round for road use.

Thanks RRSTDV8,

I was thinking more along the lines of green laning. I've seen some 19" wheels on ebay and I may go for them. Fit some ATs and off I go Very Happy Are they a straight swap or do I need spacers, speedo alterations etc?

I had an FL2 with Pirelli Verde All Seasons which were great. There wasn't anywhere it wouldn't/ couldn't go. Sadly, I haven't found these in 20"

The Michelins look like a good all rounder so may opt for them.

Which 19s are they? I believe that some don't fit over the larger brakes fitted to some models. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Those are for the Full Fat Range Rover, so not sure if they'll fit the brakes on yours.

This type will fit as it's the type I run (and previously ran on my Brembo-equipped TDV8 )

That's strong money for something I want to slightly abuse! £1250 before any rubber is more than I want to spend for wheels with rubber!!

I was just using it as a way of identifying the particular wheel design, that's all.

I paid £450 for my set and then bought a couple of others singly over time for spares. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

You can get the Pirelli Verde All Seasons in 275/45/R20 which is a popular size change with folk on here. I probably will go for this option soon at tyre change time and my insurer said it was a no cost change (A-Plan told me it's an insurer informed change with it not being a standard fitment size) 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

Although the Pirelli Verde AS is a LR OEM fit these days, in a smaller size (235/65 R17) it did not perform very well against other all season tyres.

I'll second the suggestion of 19" OE snowflakes. I've fitted a set for the winter on my TDV8 - pic below

The set of four wheels, decent condition but with trashed summer rubber only cost me £170 on the 'bay. I'm thinking of getting another set to put some AT3s on. I'm not such a fan of the 20" wheels now as the ride is much better with the 19s higher profile tyres.

2010 TDV8 - current - my first RRS, loving it so far......
2005 Cayenne S - handling defied physics and what a sound, so sod the mpg!
1995 Disco TDI- surprisingly reliable, shame about the peeling dash & other trim
Lots of other non 4X4's in between times.........

Do you know what, I’ve put my 19 original V spokes/winters on in Dec and I really like the ride. I’m considering not putting my Supercharged style 20’s on. I’ve got some bush work on the horizon which will make the ride float worthy Thumbs Up my 19’s are ok but if I chose to keep them on they’d need a refurb. Only today we went out and within 5 miles my wife’s asleep. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.
