Dead stereo .. dead screen etc

Driving home tonight in the weather I realised that I had no audio - no sound at all, not even beeps. The car was stuck on FM radio and attempting to switch to a different input did nothing - though I could still switch to nav or phone (but no audio from either)

Arrived home and cycled the ignition - now the screen is totally dead, no audio and no screen at all.

Any suggestions of the best places to start hunting?

Same happened to me a week or so ago. Left the car for an hour and come back and it's been fine since.

The battery must have been a bit low - when the ECUs detect the battery getting a bit low it starts shutting some non essential systems down - sometimes this means the radio has low volume and in others the radio is on but no sound and in others the radio stays off.

Normally when running the radio will come back or will come back with next turn on. 07MY RRS TDV6

Hm - one would hope not; it's a brand new AGM battery with a new Denso alternator in September, and I'd just made a 60 mile journey!

But .. perhaps a dodgy electrical connection due to water ingress causing the ECU to think that.. 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Not directly the same but my ten penny'th is that occasionally the display screen starts up with a snowy effect and none of the buttons work (e.g. navigation or 4x4 info). Radio, CD player etc are all fine. Turning off and then back on again, doesn't make any difference (I think it takes time to shut down after you switch off), but leaving it for an hour or so then trying it again shows that all is fine. I'm guessing a dodgy connection on boot-up but as its only occasionally and no real issue, I haven't bothered to look any further. Been doing it for 3 years or so now

What was funny was the screen (when it worked on the journey home) would accept keypresses etc, just that none of them (on the Audio selection) would do anything. You could press 'DAB' and it would highlight it yellow, then go straight back to FM Radio Laughing

I'll keep an eye on it and see if it does it again Smile 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S
