Car rolled back on an incline - had to apply the brake

I was coming out of Trowbridge to go home and stopped at a set of crossroad traffic lights which for me was on an incline. Left the car in drive and noticed that I was slowly rolling back. Not had this before but in my regular trips there are no inclines that I’d get stopped at. I had to apply the brake to stop the rolling. Is this normal or is something not right?. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Depends on how steep the incline was? Basically the car is always trying to creep forward when in Drive, so if the weight of the car trying to roll back down the hill is the same as the effort the car is trying to make to creep forward, you'll stay still.. if it's less, you'll creep forward, if it's more you'll roll back.

Apologies if that sounds like I'm teaching you to suck eggs Laughing

There's no hill-hold assist on these cars .. I assume the newer L494s have that, but no L320 that I know of does. 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Yep that’s fine Thumbs Up . I’ll not give it a second thought then. I’ll be aware of it next time I stop at an incline 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

I find generally mine will hold itself on the gearbox - even up the main road here, which has a fair incline on it.. but that could easily be a difference between TDV8 & TDV6. If the gearbox is otherwise behaving normally (no excess slip or judder) then yeah, I wouldn't worry about it Thumbs Up 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

In all honesty I've never consciously noticed mine rolling back on a hill.

There is no reason for it not to roll back if the hill is steep enough though. The reason for this is because the torque converter is a fluid coupling and therefore the gearbox is not mechanically connected to the engine via the flywheel. Providing the hill is steep enough to enable gravity acting upon mass of the vehicle to rotate the impeller within the torque converter in the opposite direction to that of the turbine, which is mechanically connected to the flywheel, the car will roll back. Kev

Facelift L320 do have a hill hold feature but it only holds for 30 seconds or so and releases as throttle is applied. It certainly isn't intended to hold indefinitely against the throttle. That's what the parking brake is for (it will hold against the creep in drive). Although if I'm sitting at lights like that I'd be in neutral with the park brake applied or holding my foot on the brake pedal in drive. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I used my parking brake to hold my car on a steep hill whilst waiting to pull out from a T junction onto a main road as it was rolling back. 30 miles later I had smoke pouring out of the real wheel as the parking brake had seized. Of course it should have released and I did push the release as I left the junction. But the mechanism can get dusty and fail to fully release. Cost about £150 for a brake service but since then I always use my left foot on the foot brake. Robin

I discovered the ‘lack of positive creep’ with my last RRS my16 AB. My drive slopes up toward the road, not particularly steep but still a slope, all loaded up ready to go when the better half decided she may have left something in the house. Whilst she rummaged in her bag for her house key one of my daughters casually said “dad, why are we going backwards?”, looked in the mirror to see the house approaching, hit the brakes just as I caught the corner of the house.

Cracked tail light and a nice gouge to the body work!

Of all the heavy vehicles I have owned, twin cab Navara’s, X5, XC90 I have never had one roll back on such a small gradient. I tried my new MY19 AB as soon as I had it and it rolled back too, must be a design issue, or ‘a feature’ of the model. MY19 RRS Autobiography Dynamic 3.0 sdv6, Carpathian Grey, black pan roof, black pack, black 22’s, black side steps, ebony/ebony interior
