Recharging the battery with alarm set.

After a week working away I came home to find the battery of my car completely discharged. After using the key to access the car I started to recharge the battery (which was down to 5.1 V). Despite charging at 6 A, it has reached a point where it just has enough juice for the alarm to (briefly) flash the indicators and chirp the sounder, which seems to discharge it again. It isn't possible to disarm the alarm with the remote. I'm assuming that the alarm / immobiliser will prevent jump-starting (which would be tricky given its location).

Any suggestions as to how I might break this empasse?

Thanks,

Hugh

May be wrong, but if you have only been away a week & its down to 5v I think you have a dead cell

well the obvious thing is to disconnect the battery from the car (one terminal)
and connect the charger directly

It has been a very, very long week! I think I used up all intellectual capacity on "hard sums".

Not just one at that point either, probably, at ~2V per cell..

If you have a Ctek or similar, a desulphate cycle might rescue it, if you're really lucky.. 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

It is. Rolling Eyes If it is dead, I do have the receipt.

It does seem to be recovering via the clever charger.

Giving it a desulphate cycle overnight.

Well that's disappointing. I would be tempted to return it anyway, they really don't like being discharged that low so it may have reduced the life of it somewhat. Confused Kev

The final outcomes are:

a) It was fine after a repair cycle by my Ring charger and (touch wood) has been fine since;
b) The evidence of me not spotting the obvious solution was sufficient indication that I need a much-deserved break, so I'm taking one!

Hugh
