Rear Window Tints

Anyone experienced the rear window tint film rippling? My MY09 TDV8 rear windows have rippled / wrinkled on both sides. I've recently added window deflectors all around (clipped in ones) but can't understand how / why that may have effected the rear film. Anyone else had this and any solutions out there?
Thanks John

I would assume the tints are aftermarket add-on - arent the factory tints the actual glass thats tinted and not film ?

Clear glass then has film added to it.

Usual reason for rippling is that thin cheap material has been used, and/or glass was not 100% clean before application.

Quality film costs around £100 per window fitted, if it's much cheaper then they'll be a reason.

I would be wearing this face Shocked if I believed the factory privacy glass was sticky back plastic and not treated glass.

But for peace of mind, put your VIN in here https://www.vindecoderz.com/ and see if it comes back with something along the lines of “Privacy Glass Dark Tinted [047AB]“ and then you’ll know whether or not it was specified by the factory. Thumbs Up

None of which solves your problem... which sounds like it needs removing and then new film Of the correct darkness reapplied. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

It is a film on clear glass, which if you were here I could prove, as, I closed my tailgate with a piece of furniture sticking out too far, and it tore a small strip of window film off.

If you need to satisfy yourself, take a stanley blade to the inside of your 'privacy' glass and see what happens.

I'd rather just take your word for it and wear this face Shocked but I remain deeply sceptical of it being a film for now because of the markings on the glass.

My privacy glass says Pilkington Sundym™ and it's marked with a glass type of V.... note, the V symbol on left in middle.
it looks like this (see fourth image for Pilkington logo):
http://www.icarpart.com/quarter-glass/2006...22386.html

The V means it means glass with "light transmission coefficient lower than 70%". HOWEVER! The rear tailgate glass only has the V type stamp and Pilkington Toughened, not Sundym. Presumably that is because the rear glass does not affect passenger comfort in the same was as side glass, it's more for privacy alone.

I suspect that if a RRS has Pilkington Sundym™ on its rear side windows then it has factory fitted privacy glass. I'd be interested to know if others have this. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

It is tinted glass, a film would indicate aftermarket. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled

I stand corrected and enlightened.

My vehicle spec says Privacy glass.

All side windows say SUNDYM, rear tailgate glass just toughened, hence the film.

Had a workshop next to a company that added film to new cars for a main dealer years ago, it just goes to show things do change.

Apologies for the mistake.

Dave B & Viper61, I would be interested to know if your rear screen has got a capital V on the left hand side of the logo or not (to the left of the E1 in a circle). I am thinking that if not then maybe your rear screen was replaced in the past with regular toughened and then tinted up to match the rest of the car. (not sure if you have owned this from new or not and therefore if you know its history). L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

I'll have a look in the morning when it's light.

I haven't had it since new, so anythings a possibility.

That make most sense, can't imagine for one minute it came from factory with privacy glass to side and clear to rear, mine is certainly coloured glass not a film. As its very easy to change the upper part of the rear tailgate I think I personally would see if I could get a second hand one with factory glass at a sensible price just check that the heated screen part works, probably wouldn't cost much more then having the film replaced and a more permanent job, but only a suggestion.

Cheers
Col

My rear screen has the 'V' symbol, so would that suggest original or replacement?

Thanks for all the replies guys, pretty sure mine is film as there are a couple of small marks where something has caught the window.

Its very strange that for the past couple of years the tints have been fine until shortly after fitting the window spoilers. The fronts have remained fine, as have the rear 1/4s its just the rear main door windows. They've both developed vertical lines (ripples) and you can feel the texture on the inside (again making me think film not treated glass).

Guess next stop a tints specialist for some advice, new films but trying to understand why this has happened before wasting more ££

The V means the glass has been manufactured to let through less than 70% light, I.e. manufactured as tinted. How they achieve the tint I suppose is up to the manufacturer, and if you (Dave B) have the V symbol AND there is evidence of film, then that must be how they achieved the V rating, I guess. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)...
