Inlet Manifold Failure - My sport is doomed!

So either I've annoyed someone in a former life or I truly am the unluckiest man on earth as before I have even paid the invoice for the EPB issue that I had last week, within 100 miles of getting the car back on the road

Big Red warning light - reduced performance message
Code reader shows P006a code

Popped the engine cover off this morning and did a visual inspection, easily found a horizontal crack in the passenger side (LHS) plastic intake manifold - googling reveals it to be a known issue on the early 3.0 cars

Other than sharing my woes, I'm posting here to ask 3 questions..

1) Are aftermarket inlet manifolds (LR105956) a false economy (they're around £150 cheaper and..... big bills!)

2) Do I need the full injector refit kits (LR017437 x 2 and LR017438 x1) or can I just use new copper washers and reuse everything else - again over £200 saving which would be pretty handy!

3) Are those part codes correct and is there anything else I need?

You have my sympathy. My 2012 3.0SDV6 did this a few weeks ago. Ended up getting both replaced on the basis that the manifold itself is the cheap bit of the job. Labour is the biggest bit by far. £1200 later... Big Cry 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I wouldn't mind so much but since May (<5k miles) I've had suspension compressor failure, EPB seize on, stranding me in a car park until 4am and now this... If my total repair bills are less than £2200 I'll be very surprised.

Still, the only consolation I have is that I bought right at the bottom price in the market knowing that these things do happen and at least once fixed I will hopefully be good for many years.

You've got me wondering about doing the other manifold as a preventative measure now!

My view was that if you're stripping a lot of stuff off the top of the engine anyway, go the whole hog and do both. If one's gone, the other might do the same. Total bill for two separate manifold changes is likely to be more than twice the price of doing both together.

If you bought one "cheap" then you're possibly expected to have found one that is a little less well looked after. The EPB sticking on, for example, might be because the previous owner never used it, or it might be that the thing was only "change the oil and top up the screen wash" serviced.

Compressor failure isn't uncommon and might point to other issues - a small leak meaning the compressor is running a lot of the time leading to premature failure.

Getting one "right" and then enjoying it, is a nice feeling. My old TDV8 had a load of issues but once I sorted it (and changed to an indy for servicing and other work), it went on to 175k+ miles with me. It's still going, bought by a chap in the village. If he looks after it, it'll do 250k easily. I've already told him that if he wants to sell it (unless it's died! Whistle ), then give me first refusal. I never should have sold it really but couldn't justify having two RRS on the drive...I think I will try harder to do so next time Rolling with laughter 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Never had a replacement genuine manifold split

That said, our Britpart rep also said they have never had one of their own brand replacements sent back under warranty...

I only replace the copper washers, never had an issue

If it makes you feel any better Derek, I recently added up how much I've spent on mine over the past 12 months - £9341.32 Shocked I am trying to latch on to the same view as you though - hopefully good for the next few years Whistle Kev

Probably something in what you say there, although the PO had allegedly serviced the car, he sold it just as the big belt service was due (another reason I got it cheap) and it turns out that the "new" EPB module that he'd had fitted a few months before sale was actually a recon unit and because he didn't change discs, pads, shoes etc at the same time it failed on me not long after!

The compressor was just bad luck I think, not sure the car had ever been offroad before and it certainly hadn't towed, both of which I do fairly regularly, I guess the extra stress caused the failure!

Still, I'm lucky to have a good friend who's a mechanic so most of these failures can be rectified fairly quickly and I'm hoping for a trouble free winter once this latest malady is cured!

I don't know about Derek, but that makes me feel much better! Laughing

He'll be a really good friend after a few RRS repair bills! Wink Joking aside, it does sound like you've already changed the big things - apart from the intake manifolds! 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

I really am doomed...

Got the car back from having a nice new inlet manifold together with genuine injector reuse kits and EGR gasket etc....
Now I appear to have some kind of small diesel leak to the lower end of the manifold somewhere (can't see where) as I've continual grey smoke, a strong diesel smell and rainbows when I park in wet spaces!

Honestly.... what next!?

What next turns out to be the suspected failure of the other side inlet manifold..... booked in to the local mechanic tomorrow to confirm but the symptoms are exactly the same as the first time round.

Ho hum, I'd had a few months without a big bill so was probably overdue lol
