Depreciation? Odd or the diesel change

Morning all,

I haven't had my moan recently actually I do love the car always stated that and my issues are solved for now.

Anyways, I am close to owning the car a year I have a 65 plate HSE, anyways I bought the car around £40k which at the time was around right perhaps close to the higher level of pricing as from memory they were around 38-42k ish.

Anyways looking at a rough part exchange price today they are looking around £28-29k , and private low 30's or so? Mileage wise it was 34k and now 41k so not huge.

Has anyone noticed the large chunk drop? Percentage wise its around 30% in 1 year? This seems high just curious if this is common.

I seem to have the worst luck on depreciation I think the rule buy a 3 year old car to help the initial depreciation hit seems to have changed.

I do love the car so all this shouldn't matter, but being prudent I like to keep a eye as life situations change.

I doubt the diesel issue is helping. But neither will uncertainty over the UK's immediate future. Also, these things are expensive new and when second hand are competing with lots of new vehicles at the same price i.e. do you buy a second hand RRS for £40k or a new SUV from some other manufacturer for similar money? People like the new car thing, especially when you can get them on PCP for not too much per month. Also, there are a lot of RRS on the second hand market - supply and demand means the prices drop i.e. it's a buyers' market at the moment. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Half of your depreciation I expect would just be dealer margin as your comparing retail price to trade in price MY 18 RRS HSE Dynamic ,MY 16 RRS Autobiography now gone & MY 2005 Discovery 3 HSE that I will be buried in !

There has been a large drop in the last 3-6 months, a friend in the trade with a lower end new 4x4 franchise, tells me glass & cap have finally forced JLR to face up to their residuals/2nd hand retail prices being false, the trade ins offered by JLR dealers in my experience were always very low & very similar no matter what retailer you visited. I would also say the 2 year approved used warranty has also been dropped to 1 year to try & recover some of their “supposed losses”

I think my AB will have to be handed back at the end of my 4 year pcp, as you can currently buy a similar 4 year old one from a JLR dealer for early 40’s with my mgfv set at £44k I don’t see any other sensible option.

It would be interesting to know what people are being offered for trade ins on 3 & 4 year old RRS on JLR pcp’s, as someone I know with a very low mileage 3 year old Hse dynamic in immaculate condition, is exactly the same as their mgfv.

I think there will be a lot of people in the same boat!

^^^ Laughing

It's also the case with the L320 prices in the second hand market. Even ones that are 9/10 years old are a couple of k cheaper than this time last year. Kev

In June 2018 my 15/15 plate HSE Dynamic, 22” wheels, pano-roof, Corris Grey, ebony interior with 23000 mikes on it (and 2 years left to go on the service contract0 was GMFV £39000, BMW dealer offered me £42000 but after a video link inspection with the LR dealership in the same group they offered me £46000, I bit their corporate hand off! The car went on the Approved used website and was taken off it 4 days later so I assume it was the right car at the right price for somebody looking for a low miles 3.5 years old Sport up in the Highlands 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim,
I believe they gave you this price against the purchase of your Mini. Did you get a discount on the new car in addition to the p/ex or was this the alternative?

I would agree your loses are mostly dealer margin.

Tim, I got no discount on the Mini - it was a new model in the range so no discount was available although due to mess-ups at BMW when they wiped out their entire database of orders doing a software upgrade they held the price to the pre-increase price I originally signed for. The car was delivered 3 months late, there was a price rise that meant the car became liable luxury car tax but BMW very kindly paid that for me too and also the VED increased from £10pa to £140 due to a redesigned petrol engine with higher emissions, this was also paid by BMW for the first 5 years. Basically I got a 2019MY car with all those upgrades for the price of the 2018MY car I ordered.
Also my RRS cost me £69000 in April 2015 so was pleased to get what was offered. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
