French speed limit margins and speeding fines

I will start by saying that this is not at all a moan or complaint - it serves me right for not knowing the rules. I am only posting this for the benefit of others who may be silly enough to make naive assumptions like I did.

Today I received violation notices from France for 2 speeding offences that I committed less than 2 hours apart on our return journey. The first one is for doing 97 km/h in a 90 zone and the second is for 117 km/h in a 110 zone. My mistake was assuming I had a universal 10% margin and setting my cruise at speed limit + 8% to 9% but their tolerances are actually as follows:

Measured by a fixed device:
5 km/h up to 100 km/h
5% above 100 km/h

Measured by a moving device:
10 km/h up to 100 km/h
10% above 100 km/h

Both my offences were caught by fixed devices and violations were deemed to be:
92 (97 - 5) km/h in a 90 zone; and
111 (117 - 5%) km/h in a 110 zone.

I have the right to appeal but ignorance is no excuse so I will just pay. Each ticket will cost me 45 EUR if paid within the (fairly generous) 46 days “reduced fine” period. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

They are strict over there. The speed limits are generally higher than the UK so I guess there is less of an excuse to go even faster than that, hence smaller margins.

I have paid mine and was very impressed with the efficient process: download the app, scan the QR code, enter card details and that's it. Of course you could choose to go on a website and mess about with entering details manually or even worse, fill paper forms and pay by post etc. but I like the speedy approach to paying your fines. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

Although the general speed limit over the whole country is 80kph which is crazily low on beautiful flowing country roads when I'm over their in my Alpine A110.

A little over 2 weeks. Violation date 1st September, letters received 17th September. Much quicker than my last year's speeding fine from Austria ( serial offender but that too was by a tiny margin Embarassed ) that took a month or more to arrive but was cheaper (30 or 35 EUR from memory).

No points thankfully. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top
