Suspension Compressor advice

Please excuse me bumping this here. It was originally under Maintenance but didn't reall yget any feedback, and I know there are lots of good folk here with experience of this.

A few weeks ago I posted about a suspension fault - suspension will lift when system is cooled.

It's been intermittent the last few weeks although I've hardly driven the car at all. When I have its only been 15 miles or less.

I took the advice I was given and put the car into off-road mode, then disconnected the battery. It's stood for a week now and hasn't dropped a millimetre.

So, I'm assuming/hoping there is no leak in the bags.

My thoughts are to try and overhaul the compressor, hoping that maybe its a sticky exhaust vavle, or worn seal.
It doesn't seem a massive or expensive job.

Any advice? Should I get the codes read before bothering? Or is a compressor overhaul a logical step? (unless I cock it up it can't hurt)

Helpful advice much appreciated.

Is your compressor running quite a lot and overheating?

Or, is it only running for a short time and overheating? Kev

Have you checked the compressor end cap for leaks between the pipes? My D3 did this bought one off ebay and did it myself on the driveway. Worth a check with a bit of soapy water. Have a look at the link below.

if no leaks, new air dryer desiccant is likely to sort your problem,
full overhaul wouldn't harm either, about to do just that next week as mine has the same issue

I had something similar earlier this year on my RRS. The compressor was running longer than usual and if off-road height was selected, it took quite a while with 'suspension raising slowly' and the overheat warning; it would sit in off-road height without the level dropping. The culprit became apparent when I spent a day off-road and could hear air escaping through the wet mud. Air was escaping from the top of the reservoir: over the years, water spray / wet mud sits on top of it and intergranular corrosion sets in, leaving it like flaky pastry. The compressor ran for ages because air is leaking out almost as quickly as it is pumping it in; this led to it getting hot.

In the absence of runny mud, soapy-water and a keen ear are very useful - but won't be of use pressure is not building-up.

Including the new reservoir, the bill for replacing it was £216. For three days before it went in, I squirted penetrating oil on the fixings and the air-line fitting twice a day (but that's just me!). The compressor now runs for under a minute when the car first starts, doesn't keep 'topping-up' and the car fairly leaps into the air when off-road is selected.

Who'd have thought that a Land Rover would be exposed to moisture and mud, eh? Rolling Eyes

cheers guys!

Will check the compressor end cap and resorvoir for leaks.

May well end up overhauling the compressor anyway, and changing the dessicant as it sounds like a reasonably straight forward job to do, and parts are cheap.
