Should Dash Cams be disconnected as part of annual service?

Is Dash Cam disconnection a normal part of service? Stratstone Aylesbury have just undertaken The 5 year service of my RRS MY14 and the dash cam footage shows it was disconnected (both front and rear cameras) immediately prior to leaving their premises for what I am being told was a test drive. This test drive lasted 11 minutes only and was conducted wholly in a built up area of Aylesbury. My tracker system shows this and that the top speed of the vehicle was 37.9mph in a 30mph zone. I have taken up this issue with Stratstone and been told by the Dealer Principal that it is a normal part of the service. That makes no sense to me at all so am persuing the matter and also the speeding issue. Last year tracker recorded a Stratstone employee driving at over 90mph in a 70mph area and 50mph in a 30mph area. So they have history!

Now that my 5 year service plan is finished I think any future work will be undertaken elsewhere. If I change the vehicle I certainly will not use Stratstone Aylesbury or any other Stratstone.

This a difficult one, who can honestly say they have not done 40mph in a 30 zone? If there was proof of your vehicle being driven dangerously then yes you would have a case, but the car will not have been thrashed and most probably driven within fair limits for the test drive (albeit over the speed limit). I assume that you can prove that the car was in Stratstone's custody at the time of the test drive and if a speeding ticket came through you would be able to prove it was one of their employees who was driving?

Conversely if you had a loan vehicle whilst yours was in for service do you think Stratstone's would be complaining to you for doing 40 in a 30 (unless they receivet a ticket for whilst it was in your custody)? MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)

I'm sure my indie does this as well but never really given much thought as to why,, saying that, I was cleaning the car a couple of weeks ago and had the doors open for a good while longer than I normally do,,, which sets the dashcam recording. I also fiddled with the seat settings a bit, when i went to take the car out a few hours later the battery was proper flat,,, and it's not an old battery. Maybe this is one of the reasons they disconnect them. 2010 RRS, TDV8

They all do it, not just Land rover. I have had it with my Range rover, Jaguar, Mercedes & Porsche. Every time without fail. Must be the first thing they do, but never connect them back up. Probably give you some guff about Health & Safety or Data Protection.

We always leave the cameras plugged in for road testing etc, but they are unplugged when coming into the workshop

There are many, many thousands of pounds of equipment and tools inside, so giving any potential theives a first hand layout of what we have worked hard for the last 5 years to achieve...

Under GDPR legislation they are also totally entitled to demand that their images are removed from your dash cam footage as you are filming employees in the workplace to which you have no right.

Thanks to all for replies and some good points made. I had advised Stratstone that dash cams and tracker systems fitted. Thus if they were concerned about GDPR they could request disconnection or do this themselves at time of vehicle entry into workshop. What I do not understand is why the dash cams were disconnected after all work done and just prior to test drive.

you, or your car in this case are on private land and they have every right to say no filming, or photography, strange that they unplugged it to do the road test though, if it was filming whilst in th workshop

so in recent years my cars have had the dashcams unplugged, and when it was repairs at a body shop, i refused to unplug it, as i wanted proof they wasn't hooning around in my Audi S4 and they attached a piece of paper to the windscreen obscuring its view, it left the dashcam running filming a white area at the front, and not done at the rear of the car though Laughing

I suppose they don't want to be filmed, changing the brake pads in 30 minutes and billing you for 2 hours, or some sort of H&S breach

UPDATE re Stratstone Aylesbury

UPDATE: Stratstone Aylesbury Dealer Principal has now admitted that the road test was not undertaken adequately. After exchanging a number of emails with him I took my car to a Land Rover independent specialist who confirmed that the transfer box oil had not been changed. This was ticked on Stratstone's service sheet as having been done. It seems that the main engine oil and filter had been done.

No explanation has been forthcoming as to why the dash cams were disconnected until the start of the road test.

They didn't do the transfer box oil but did tick the sheet? No surprise there. Stop using LR dealers for servicing. They over charge and do a rubbish job. Sure, they do a service plan but if they don't do the work properly (or at all, in this case) then the so-called savings are soon swallowed up by you having to get things sorted out, revisits, etc.

I'd certainly be asking the dealer principal why his "technicians" didn't do the job properly. I'd copy LRCS in too - not that it will do any good. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
