Front diff oil recommendations

Hi folks,

Can somebody please point me the right way on what oil to put in my front diff. No problems just a routine change.

Steve. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Hi Steve, it's 0.6 litres of 75w90 GL5 LR part no. TYK500010

For example...
https://www.smithandallan.com/products/tra...fs-75w-90/

Rear diff is the same if you have the non-locking diff but the quantity is 1.1 litres. Kev

Andy is quite correct it’s in a gold bottle.

But to be a little more specific

Castrol Syntrax Long Life 75W 90

All the fluids in my previous link are the ones recommended in the workshop manual.
Surely you can use other similar products but why?
link again: https://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/430...l_oil___1l

From the workshop manual regarding front diff & rear open diff.
* Recommended lubricant Castrol SAF-XO - 75W/90
* Do not use any lubricant other than that specified

Does anyone have any documentation to say it has to be long life/semi-synthetic/fully synthetic?

The gold bottle is fully synth, the grey one is semi synth.

If it meets the spec that is specified, manufacturer and branding aside, it meets the spec.

If you go to the Opie Oil site and look up Castrol Syntrax 75W 90 you will find it used to be called Castrol SAF XO 75W 90.

It’s the same oil.

As said. The gold bottle is the one in production currently.

Grey bottles could have been stuck on a dusty shelf for 10 years and demand a premium price for the privilege.

So Land Rover specified the semi-synth (grey bottle) when they built the vehicle, but the fully synth (gold bottle) is what is being used now as the semi-synth is no longer manufactured by Castrol. Makes sense Thumbs Up

So the conclusion is that 75w90 GL5 is the correct spec and either semi or fully synth is suitable. Kev

It's a Re branding on Castrols behalf, both 100% the same Fully synthetic API GL-5,
SAF-XO came in white, black & grey 1 liter bottles & now gold with a new name. 20 liter are still grey plastic or brown metal, 200 liter drums are green.
No matter what, Castrol claims it's all the same oil and some syntrax long life containers has the writing: formerly SAF-XO

Oil & tyres = debate - always

I have no idea why I thought the grey bottles were semi-synth. I can only think that it was because of the addition of 'Longlife' on the gold bottles. Rolling Eyes Kev

Hi guys, just found this thread and thought I’d add onto it! Being new to RRS after having FFRR for years, I just wanted to check that the diffs and transfer boxes are the same as I want to do my fluids. If I remember it’s lesser on front diff to rear, but 2litres of oil should cover it and two litres for the trans box also.
Can someone please clarify this for me please Thumbs Up Current: 2010 RRS 3.6 TDV8 HSE
