United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport Supercharged HST Java Black
TV Tuner

Good morning all!
I have a question which most likely has been asked many times before.

I have just purchased a 2008 RRS Supercharged HST. Before purchasing this one I was looking for one which had a DVD player and screens in the headrests.

Unfortunately, the one I ended up purchasing was lacking in those features.

I am now wondering how difficult or costly would it be to add the factory fitted TV tuner (no need for DVD really) for viewing when stationary (while wife takes ages shopping. Lol).

I was wondering if I could easily add a reversing camera too.

Thanks in advance for any replies

All is doable but it depends how much you want to spend and how much of the car you want to strip. An aftermarket kit is the easier option with the OEM fit being more complicated but is integrated with the front screen. The Tv isn’t that great when on the move as the signal drops out an awful lot but seeing as you only really want to use it when parked, that wouldn’t be an issue however you would probably need the engine running as after 10 minutes the audio system enters sleep mode anyway.

Reverse camera is easy enough on a facelift but not sure on the earlier cars. Maybe an aftermarket job? 2012 5.0 SC AB

Thanks for your response Brit Plumber. I have only had the car a week today! Razz

I don't want to have the interior pulled apart in order to fit the OEM TV tuner. I was think that the wiring loom would already be in place making for an easy install.

For now, I will leave it alone - until the urge comes back. Lol.

Reverse camera would most likely be a more useful thing to have to be honest.

I fitted a O.E reverse camera to my old HST by using a rear spoiler from a facelift A/B, powered it via the reverse light feed from a rear lamp unit and then coax cable through a GVIF unit linked to the front screen, also linked it to the Rosen rear entertainment system, a Phillps TV tuner and 6 disc DVD player all to front screen so could have TV front and rear, DVD or iPod playing music on whichever individual screen you wanted. I also don't think reverse camera or tv tuner was ever a factory option on a pre-facelift but could wrong on that one but don't ever recall seeing one.

Cheers
Col

All options are painful!

1) New headunit with TV/Camera/Navigation (generally the existing car display is disabled when new headunit fitted)
2) A GVIF unit £120 ish can be used to display a reverse camera on the existing display. (and 3 other AV inputs like TV or DVD). SO you could get a cheap aftermarket TV tuner and GVIF.

Option 2 is probably the way forward. Unless you like to play music from the internet / MP3

another option and one I've been considering, but find the price a bit steep. Is to replace the satnav screen with the custom made android tablets. These would be able to take a usb tv tuner quite easily.

Theres a UK seller for one, but I've seen cheaper on aliexpress etc, but they obviously come with a bigger risk

you would keep your original headunit setup and I'm thinking these piggyback on the aux input for audio

The aux input is poor / quiet.
Maybe ok for tv. But not good for music

I find the aux input excellent ? using it for the last two years with my bluetooth music dongle.

I can not talk about the RRS1, but my last Evoque and current RRS2 has a TV. Both purchased nearly new so not my specification. However on both the TV in my opinion is a waste of space. Once the engine is off there is a 10 minute countdown until the system turns off to save the battery.

If you are only looking to watch TV when the better half is shopping it is probably better to stream TV to your mobile or if you want a bigger screen then hotspot to a tablet.

I have no experience but it might also be possible using Android Auto or Apple Car Play on an after-market head unit? MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)

They don’t tend to have the wiring present though
