Could say the same about all the latest L/R products, all look like they came out off the same factory jelly mould. Laughing

True. But at least the starting point wasn’t a vanilla flavoured FWD hatchback that as common as muck. A Fatty owner, just dropping by Smile

Australia 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Santorini Black

Same wine, different bottle.

In this country VW tried to sell V8 Touregs before:
First the petrol 4.2 V8
Second the 4.2 TD V8

All were a sales flop.

Never mind the TD V10 and the R50, they were a sales flop too.

VW should stick to what they are good at, selling $24,999 Golfs.

Range Rover Sport will always be in a different class to these, I know it sounds stuck up but it's true, Sports are in a different league.

Sorry if it does !

My point is that they are two completely different motors which cant really be compared. I do think the sport though is in a higher level of class that's a fact.

I've had Volkswagen's in the past and they do not feel 'special' enough for me. However, it may be a great car. Kev

VW sell to people who buy in to the "if only everything in life was as reliable as a VW" marketing. People who prefer the mpre Teutonic look etc. The Touareg is aimed at those people.

LR sell to people who buy in to the "best 4x4xfar" "go anywhere you like" marketing. The Range Rover models sell a perception of luxury which, combined with high price tags, make them feel high class, important etc. "Special" if you will.

It's all marketing and perceived quality. The reality is that the vehicles are similar enough in actual quality to make no difference. It's our own preconceptions that determine which is "better".

I had a Mk 4 Golf back in the day. It felt really well made, good quality materials, some well thought out features, nice leather etc, it felt special. Indeed, in many ways it felt more special than my first RRS which was 5 years older than it. Sure, very different vehicles and incomparable in every other aspect - especially price(!) - but the Golf was "special". Looking back now, I think the Golf was ahead of what LR were doing in terms of "luxury" and that was probably a big part of why it felt so good. LR now do luxury very well, they just need to work on their QA etc to back it up with an appropriate ownership experience.

Comparing the RRS and Touareg, I would think in extremis the RRS would go places the Touareg wouldn't, but VW aren't aiming for that. The reality is that almost no RRS will go off road anyway so its just marketing - you could if you wanted to. Although once the RRS is shod with shiny wheels and rubber band tyres from some unknown Chinese firm, it'll struggle to go anywhere! Rolling with laughter 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
