Hi guys,
It seems that a lot of range rover sports L320 suffer from instrument cluster failure that causes the radio, blowers and sat nav to shutdown while driving and also show hazard lights on. It also causes the car to not start showing HDC fault, park brake fault, and other random faults.

Has anybody here had the courage to open an instrument cluster and see what exactly goes wrong that can cause this failure? If anybody has had luck opening one up and see anything suspicious would be great to know. There are so many cases like this all over the web that surely somebody would be able to write a HOW TO guide. 2008 Range Rover Sport 2.7 SE Zermatt Silver.

I think someone on the disco 4 site fixed theirs when they found dry joints to some of the soldered components. Not sure if that is the fault you refer to though. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

Yes, that's the rumour dry joints, but I wouldn't know where to look. If everybody is having similar issues it must be on the same components. The question is which ones. 2008 Range Rover Sport 2.7 SE Zermatt Silver.

I have a feeling unless you are seriously into your electronic repairs I would leave it to the professionals as you could easily make it ten times worse. There are companies out there that specialise in repairing these units for around the £150 mark,,, remove the unit, post it to them and they will turn it round in a day or 2,,,, unless you are local to them as some offer a workshop service whereby they remove the unit as well.
I'm sure one outfit was call totaltronics,, or something similar, I would Google " instrument cluster repair " and see what you get. 2010 RRS, TDV8

The circuit board is complex with fine pitch solder connections.

And what with the dash containing the imboliser key, think carefully of the way forward

I solved the problem with a cheaper alternative.

I did think it was a specialized job but the quotes I received to get it repaired were all between £200 and £260 plus I had to have no car for 5 days, which in my case it is a problem as it is my main and only car.

So I decided to translate the Russian website I mentioned earlier which basically says to reflow a couple of IC's (IC10 and 64F2638F20) which made me think that a local PCB assembler should have the right equipment and personnel to do it within an hour. So what I did was to take the cluster out, walk to my local PCB assembler and showed them the two ICs that needed reflow, one hour later I had my cluster back. Reinstalled it and 2 weeks later the problem never reappeared.

Is this the issue that causes the Hazards to flash, doors to lock and fault codes 'vehicle lean when cornering','HDC Fault', 'Parking break fault,'ABS Fault'.
I have fault codes that link to communication with instrument cluster and Body control module. I am also currently sorting out the sunroof drain leak onto cables so drying all this out but think I will try this next if this relates to the issues im having

I had all those symptoms except 'vehicle lean when cornering' and 'ABS fault'. I don't have a sunroof tho but technician said could have been a leak. Looked for leaks but found nothing. Cluster was my only option at the end. And it was the cluster.  2008 Range Rover Sport 2.7 SE Zermatt Silver.

As an electronics engineer I would certainly reflow the connectors, as vibration often causes problems there, but I'd be surprised if the two IC's needed reflowing.
(I'm not saying they don't particularly need it, if someone has done some in-depth anaylsis, just that I'm surprised.)
