Alarm/Smart Key Not Found Issue

Hey all,

Picked up my 2010 RRS on Friday and all was going well until last night when I went out in the car to the shop.

Unlocked, got in, drive to shop, got out, locked with key fob... then as I'm walking away the alarm went off.
Tried to unlock the car with the key fob to disable alarm and nothing happened.

The key fob unlocked the car, but the alarm was still sounding and I couldn't start the car and had a message on the dash saying Smart Key Not Found.

Held the key under the steering wheel and managed to start the car and disable alarm.

Turned car off, got out, locked it and all was well again.

Exactly the same happened 10 mins later when I got home.

Then again this morning but it was slightly different this time - the car had been sat locked overnight, and it happened when I unlocked the car this morning.

It's not doing it every time I lock/unlock so seems to be intermittent.

Are there any known issues like this? Anything I can try out?

EDIT: Updated title to reflect newer issues.

I had the key not found message and changed the batteries in both fobs. This seemed to solve the problem for a couple of quid.
Depending on age/charge condition of the car's battery, it may be worth giving that a charge as well. If it's not these, you may need a code reader to see if there are any faults logged.

Thanks for the reply..

The garage I bought it from said they'd put a new battery in the fob - I'd assumed it was because the low battery warning had come up, but now I'm thinking it was because of this alarm issue, and that was the easiest thing for them to try.

It's done it twice again today, one first thing, then once again this afternoon (after numerous locks/unlocks in between).

Looking through the service history and receipts earlier, I saw that it had a new KVM 2 years ago, so I wouldn't have thought it was an issue there.

Aside from battery (both fob and car) alongside a faulty KVM is there any other potential issues that people know of?

so, this afternoon, on top of the alarm/smart key issues I've now got a Park Brake Fault.

It seems that the Park Brake tries applying (I can hear some park brake related noises) but then I get a flashing red P symbol and amber warning triangle on the dash.

A quick search of the forum suggests this could be battery related.

With the Alarm/smart key issue combined with this Park Brake fault would you say the first thing to try would be the battery?

If it's been sat at the dealers for a while it may be worth giving the battery a good charge with a decent charger/reconditioner lke a CTEK. 2016 Black SDV8 Autobiography

What should the battery voltages be on one of these?

According to the Vehicle Signals menu in the car, i had 11.9V this morning. And with the car running (idle) that jumps up to 14V.

Mine tends to be at 14V when running and around 12.2V at startup. 2016 Black SDV8 Autobiography

Ok, so I replaced the battery last night and it's not made any difference.

So, I've decided that the Park Brake Fault isn't the battery, and that needs treating as a separate issue.

Still having intermittent issues with the Smart Key Not Found message.

One thing I have noticed is that if it happens when I'm trying to lock the car, instead of locking, the headlights come on.
If I press the lock button again they go off...

Anyone heard of that before?

Are you sure you are not pressing the approach lighting button at the same time as the lock button on the fob.

Cheers

I'm definitely only pressing the lock button... but... I have changed the fob to the newer style one, so I wonder if the buttons aren't quite aligned properly. That would answer that one I suppose.

I'm off to see our local Land Rover specialist tomorrow so hopefully, he can shed some light on the Smart Key Not Found issue.

You say you replaced the fob, what exactly did you do? Could be a comparability issue. 2012 5.0 SC AB

Just changed the case mate, not the actual PCB.
The issue was present prior to changing the fob case so it's not related to that.

Does it look the same as this? There are different cases where symbols are in a different place.
