Many years ago (early 1970s) I was on holiday and saw a digger get stuck in the beach with the tide coming in. It was installing breakwaters and so getting stuck probably wasn't a first. The driver stuffed every inlet/outlet with loads of rags; at low tide he took them out again, started-up the digger and carried on with the work.
