I have noticed my suspension was a bit rough and noisy going over potholes etc. I took it to the JLR dealer here in Spain and they advised me one of the front shocks was damaged and i will need to replace both front ones. I'm sure this will be expensive.
the car has only done 40k miles etc, does anyone know why i would need to change them both?

I think a little more info might help.
What year is the car, engine, etc.

Maybe worth getting a local garage to check the front bushes etc prior to fitting new struts

Also worth looking on the Disco 3/4 forum as they are more into DIY In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures

Shocks are always replaced in pairs.
