I suppose what the yanks like about it (and maybe why there's so much money attached to the deal) is that it's probably more than just hiring a football player (or whatever you call them) - I suppose he'll be used to increase the visibility of proper football over there, as opposed to the heavily protected rugby variant that they currently have

It IS a shedload of money though. Blimey, he'll nearly be earning as much as VA!

Last time I was on the West Coast of the US all the TV programmes were running items about how quickly soccer was taking over from American football and how worried the NFL was becoming about decreasing crowds at matches. While we were in Seattle ManU and Celtic played an exhibition match at which Becks played, it was the biggest ever number of spectators at a soccer match in the USA and the Seattle stadium (the big new one) was filled to capacity. My ship's crew were offered tickets at $100 a piece which they turned down............. our berth was across a small creek from the stadium and standing on the bridge top we had a grandstand view in the sunshine with cold beers to hand and could see all the action on the HUGE TV screen on the far end of the stadium. It was a crap game but most of the crowd wouldn't have known any better anyway.
A month later we had made it across to the east coast (via Hong Kong Singpaore and the Suez Canal) to New York and in the summer sunshine we saw that the vast playing fields on the Jersey side opposite our berth on Staten Island had been converted from being a place for American football to about 10 soccer pitches with proper sets of goal posts. Soccer was sweeping the States very quickly, apparrently because soccer moms prefer Elmer jnr to play soccer rather than getting mauled playing Football.

I too heard the bit this morning on R4 with becks saying he was doing it because he wanted a challenge! B*ll*cks! On the BBC World Service News at 2am they said he was earning £125 million over 5 years then on the 3am news they said £125 million in a single year......... now my calculator says that £500,000 a week = £26,000,000 a 52 week year and £130,000,000 over 5 years - somebody needs to research exactly how much he is going to be paid, however much it is going to be, it will be a totally staggering amount! Half of me wonders whether Posh is driving the move really. Wasn't it the case that she never really liked it in Spain? Just think of all the new "celebrity" friends she'll be able to rub shoulders with in the Hollywood hills! Maybe this is the payback chance she's been waiting for...
