Hi All,

Hope your weekend is going better than mine...

So as the title says I've got battery drain from a steady 12.5V when engine is off, or 14V+ when running across the terminals tonite being almost dead overnight...

Obviously loads on here about it and I suspect an earth leak simply because after jump starting and a good 1 hour run at 3000rpm and above all seems well, no error messages etc.

One extra titbit bis that the obd port doesn't seem to be powered anymore. Regardless of engine on or off my iid tool doesn't work.

Any ideas where to look first?

Any recommendations appreciated.

Alternator?

I think these have a big fuse in the big battery cable going to the starter.

Measure voltage across it with engine off and charged battery.

On 2v range. If u get 1 volt ish it's alternator.

Alternitivky remive fuse over nite and see if it remains charged. This is a good idea to save your battery.

This applies where the battery is going flat quick

Could you give you opinion on my thoughts:Based on my logic (not the best ) I think it could be the battery. Basically, charged it overnight and whilst charging it showed 14V+ across the terminals. This morning the battery showed 12-13V across the terminals when disconnected. PLease note I have a analogue multimeter, nothing flashy.

However, when connected and I allowed the car 'settled down' after running its diagnostics, and whatever, after the battery was connected I tried starting the car and it struggled to start. Normally, I give the key a 'quick' turn to 'ignition' and release and the car starts immediately. This time nada... So I tried again and held key in position and it started eventually.

Took it to the garage to get sorted as have to work...

Just to be sure, what is the correct specs for the battery. The car is a 2006 4.2SC?

I have an OEM LR Varta battery installed and it's rated at 700A/ 80Ah, but, when I use the Varta website they recommend batteries in excess of 830A and 95Ah Could this be the problem? Especially, considering that I do at lot of short journeys with AC etc. running?

The battery is a 80Ah 700A batter with manufacturer code 6G9N-10655-RC as per the pic below:

That's the same rated battery my 5.0L S/C had from new, the petrol one's seem to be lower rated than the diesel spec. ones. I actually replaced mine with a Varta AGM Stop/Start battery I think it was type G14 whatever that translates to in rating but is higher than original and never been any problem, when get a few minutes will have a look under bonnet and check rating. Look's Like 95Ah 850A. UK code 019 AGM

Looks like an original battery get it changed and see if you can get a 95 ah one for a bit more power

That was my thought once it's confirmed to be a dead battery...

I'm surprised at the OEM rating (700A/ 80Ah), as whenever I google that I get results for the RR Ewok and not Sport For the Sport I've always found recommendations in line with what you have written/ recommended or sometimes even higher (100Ah, but, I guess that's for the V8 diesel in cold climates )

I'll call the garage to make sure they put in a higher rated battery if that's the fault.

Does sound like a new battery would be a good idea.

I would expect a 90Ah one really, (but yes I know they have been fiting 80's)

The garage has confirmed that the battery is FUBAR'd and that LR here only carries that one battery type...

So will collect the car runn ing and head to a battery shop, can anyone recommend a DELCO battery suitable for the Sport?

Well thanks for all the help and advise

Problem now solved. Rather than going with an AC Delco battery ended up with a Bosch S5 013 100Ah 830A, Type 019 battery.

One thing that shocked me was how the guys changed the battery... with the engine running

I'd initially left it running and when I saw that they were going to start disconnecting the old battery I turned off the ignition. They shook their heads and said "no, no, engine on" , so I did and they then proceeded to remove the cables from the terminals -ve then +ve I think and the fit the new Bosch battery...

Can't believe that's standard practice, but, I'm sure a knowledgeable person will advise accordingly.

One interesting fact is that Tayna/ Bosch in the UK offer 5 years on the battery in Oman only One...

I'm looking forward to the car starting without problems in the morning.

You're telling me... I was there watching them going expecting one of them to be flying through the air with smoking hair...

Another interesting thing is that on checking the Tayna site they actually recommend an even bigger battery than the Bosch I installed

Instead of the 019 battery they recommend an 020, so 110Ah and 920A or there about. So why did LR install a 80Ah 700A battery?? I'll sleep on that.

Perhaps a LR rep could explain?

Do not think they will but cranking amps will always make starting easy Cant actually believe they changed a battery with the engine running t hat could be so dangerous
