Fuel tank seems smaller than 86 litres it should be ? 306 BH

Hi all

I've done 2300 miles now and obviously filled up a few times.

I ran the car to only 16 miles range and it only took 72 litres. Therefore leaving 14 capacity left in the car ?!?

My BMW 5 series had a 65 litre tank and would re fill 63 litres in a similar position

Range is only showing as 460 miles on average and that's at 30mpg ish average.

Doesn't stack up to me ? Thoughts appreciated !

Australia 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Bonatti Grey

Range Rover and others give a lower to empty reading than actual. At 2 miles to go you may still have 5-8 ltrs left.

Reason -its not good to run out of fuel in modern cars. Some have fuel pumps in the tank which has to remain submerged or are diesel (heaven forbid) which has to be bled of air and reprimed.(not the sort of thing you want to be doing).
In addition if filling with diesel it froths up and triggers the shut off. A slower fill can often result in an extra 4-5ltrs. Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 S/C with Tow Pack, Side Steps, DRL's, 19" & 20" wheels, additional 110 ltr Fuel Tank Roof Rack and performance mods.

1952 Rover 75 (Cyclops) First Car !!! Fond memories -was restored-good for 93mph.

To me it still doesn't stack up. Brim to brim I've just worked out that the long term average (long being 2000 miles) is 29.1 MPG... so 86 LITRES = 18.92 gallons... so that a range of 550.57 miles. Yet I have never seen more than 470 indicated. If there was 4-5 litres left in reality (that makes sense) then that's only another 30 miles or so at that MPG as that's one gallon.

They advertise is a ridiculous 764 miles range based on the combined MPG "official" figures. And that's been worked out exactly the same way by multiplying 18.92 with 40 mpg....

I honestly think that either the tank isn't anything like 86 litres and they literally are lying...I keep brimming it and add the extra 3/4 litres at the end.

It's quite disappointing and misleading I think.

The most I have ever got into my tank is 79.6 litres, I don't recall that being at anything much under 20 miles range left, and so I would not really doubt the advertised capacity.

Question - is the V8 diesel supplied with a larger tank than the V6? MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

I don't think so, the filler being in the engine compartment? Makes me assume the adblue tank is thereabouts too. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Well I'm convinced its not the size advertised.

Can anyone who has a 306bhp 3.0 Diesel tell me they are able to put in more than 80 litres and they get 550 miles + range at fill up ?

The fuel tank is shown in the spec. as 89 'usable' litres with both V6 and V8 engines, and that's in current models with AdBlu tanks.

My Australian Spec 2016 RRS SDV8 HSE Dynamic has "Fuel tank capacity - usable 105 litres" as per my saved Land Rover Online Configuration.

I filled up the tank with diesel today, after having the fuel slosh/thump mod kit fitted, the Instrument Panel display showed 999Km Range.

Do you have AdBlu in the Antipodes, though? That reduced tank capacity in the UK.

Off this topic, but how do you like your SDV8? I've just ordered one in preference to a V6 (despite being unable to get a test drive in one) and having read 'mixed' reviews to say the least. I did manage to drive an SDV8 FFRR, which I thought was great, and I'll be well pleased if the RRS with the same engine gives the same pleasure. Have you driven an SDV6 as well? How do you reckon they compare?

my 2016 does not have AdBlu, it was suggested by salesman that it may be fitted for MY2017. I believe the AdBlu filler and tank are under the bonnet and inside the guard over the LHS front wheel. I was shown a black dummy cover plate near the oval air intake ducts. (I could have been misled).

Off topic:

Opting for SDV8 is a drivers choice. I have test driven various 2016 RRS engine variants including 3 SDV6s each of them for me exhibited an undesirable delay when wanting to accelerate from standstill into traffic at junctions etc. I was not used to this with my 2009 TDV8. I solely use my RRS for touring & off road camping trips with my 2 tonne Kimberley Karavan, I appreciate the SDV8 response & performance to confidently overtake Aussie Road Trains etc.

The SDV8 has lost the V8 exhaust note that was just right in the old TDV8s.

You should test drive both V6 & V8 diesels consecutively to be sure of your choice, most still buy the 6s. Aussie Spec MY16 RRS SDV8 Dynamic

Unfortunately, I couldn't get a test drive in an SDV8 (they are as rare as hen's teeth in the UK so it seems) so had to make do with an SDV8 FFRR. However, if the RRS SDV8 performs anything like as good as the FFRR I'll be well pleased. I was also impressed with the engine note from outside, which, although not burbly, was certainly not diesel-like. (Inside the FFRR you couldn't hear the engine at all, but the car I tested had double-glazing).

As to testing consecutively, by the time I tested the FFRR they didn't have any SDv6 to test, nor even in the showroom, they seemed to have sold them all! (It's over a year since I drove an SDV6, but I wasn't impressed by it at the time engine-wise).

I have found that the latest software upgrade which was not labelled as a performance upgrade (Q634) seems to have remapped something in either the engine ECU or the gearbox ECU and I find that the tiny bit of hesitation that there was is a thing of the past, the car is now very responsive to the throttle at all revs. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
