Looking through the owner's handbook I noticed instructions for using the Timed Climate Control and it shows a remote control which would be handy for me.
Now I do have an auxilary heater and timed climate but no remote.
Should I have this or is it an extra ?

Is your car a 2013 L320 model or an L494 - I'm thinking that as your avatar shows a TDV6 it maybe one of the run out models of the L320 so you should be able to upgrade. Try contacting Disco-Mikey or Bodsy. It won't be timed CLIMATE control but timed Park Heating so you can pre-warm the cabin but not pre-cool it. Pre-cooling is available as an expensive option on L494, but I don't know if it came be retro-fitted. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Does it fire up the compressor/engine ?

No, it just winds the windows down.
