Engine pinking

Hi all
Finally got around to blanking the egrs at weekend but have now noticed on hard acceleration I'm getting a loud pinking noise from engine.Drive it like a granny and no problem no smoke or other issues and no noise on tick over.Its the 2.6tdv and some owners on here say this is normal but I'm not too sure any help would be most appreciated.
