Hi All, had a strange noise on the RRS the other day after a 40 mile drive, the noise then vanished and all has been fine for a couple of days. Tonight i decided to collect the wife from work and after starting up i realised that the Alternator light was iluminated, i turned off and started up but still there nice and bright with a smell of burning from the front end, i then put my multimeter on the terminals to find the voltage dropping at .1v every second !!!Turned everything off and now have about 4volts left in the battery |

I would say so! Did you disconnect battery? Otherwise battery will be trashed too! Bodsys Brake Bible

With 4V from the battery it's probably already had it. |

Thank goodness for my extended Sytner warranty eh (£620,00) p.a, it's recovered and on it's way for a new alternator. Just wondering though is it normal for the alternator to eat and totaley destroy the battery like it has ? |

Depending on the failure, yes. If it's the regulator and it overvolts, it will fry it; if it's the diodes, it will short it out, and if it's brushes then it could become knackered through lack of charge if not picked up on. ![]() 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 Auto HSE Zambezi Silver ![]() |
