Whenever I have ordered NEW a space saver spare wheel has been a deal breaker. The deal never broke 😉 |

He cares when he is driving his children home after a puncture with a dangerous wheel that the MANUFACTUER states should not be on a car with standard size wheels. Or do you ignore MANUFACTUER advice about wheel/tyre size per axle or front/back left/right? Kick up a fuss you'll get the full size spare, if not cancel the order. Mismatched wheel size can cause havoc on a RRS. |

If the space saver is supplied by LR then it is safe to use on the vehicle. It may have speed and distance limits imposed on it (in order to protect the relevant diff) but that is not the same as saying it is dangerous. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I used to tow a twin axle caravan and wouldn't like to have used a space saver with that on the back |

No reason a space saver can't be fitted with an extremely closely matching tyre - For example, a 205/75/R19 is very, very close to a stock 255/55/R20. It may not be suitable for higher speeds/longer times but it is in no way unsafe, and is close enough not to do damage if used briefly as a get-me-home. Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

My emphasis at the end. I think this is the key issue - on a space saver you will find the handling and emergency braking performance will not be as expected with the full sized tyre. By limiting speed, they limit the chances of you losing control or having a high speed shunt. On my RRS, the spare is the black 8Jx19 and is fitted with 255/55/19 Grabber AT. The wheel has the limiting sticker on it and I discussed this with my normal tyre guy. His view is that the tyre is full size and the wheel is ok for the tyre so the speed/distance issue doesn't apply. It's more of an issue where you have different sized spares as is common with space savers. Here, there can be a difference in rolling circumference which, used long term and at speed, could put a strain on the diff. This is why LR say don't drive a great distance (the AA say distance isn't limited) which lends weight to the idea that protecting the diff is the problem. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

If changing from a space saver spare to a full sized alloy spare are there any other considerations? Is it just a case of taking the space saver out and putting the full size in its place? No changes needed to the winch or other items? -----------------------------------------------

Straight Swap, any thing larger than a 275/45 x 20 or 285/35 x 22 though and I think you may struggle to get it in the space.

I have used my space saver spare twice now each time after i had the contis burst. Take it nice and easy and its no problem replace as soon as possible. It would be better to have a full size spare though. SVR 2018 in Santorini Black. |
