hi all so i have booked my car into stratstone woodford (halinut)
for the 105k service including cambelts change i enquired about changing the oil pump housing at the same time and was merely told that this won't need doing its not an issue etc, the common we know what were doing attitude was clearly on display. when i said I'm not saying it needs doing I'm saying i want it done as a precaution. i was grumpily told it will take 3 hours labour extra on top of the cambelt change, does this amount of time sound correct and is it hard and a lot more work to change this part or is it as simple as whilst doing the cambelts unbolt the old housing and bolt on the new one

with the fact it took me 5 phone calls to them to finally get this answer i am shall we see unimpressed already and am considering taking it elsewhere.

the car is on a 57 plate by the way

They are after all referred to as 'Crapstones' by some owners

It is very important that the cambelt change is carried out on schedule. It has been reported that when changed at 105,000 miles (and also when changed at much lower mileages such as 60,000 miles) the old belt and idler pulleys were in very poor condition suggesting that the scheduled change is too late so prudent owners change the cambelt at earlier age/mileage.

If you do search of our sister site Disco3.co.uk you will find chapter and verse on the oil pump issue written by the resident hand-on experts Bodsy, Flack, Disco Mikey, Geoff. et al. The following is somewhere near the latest knowledge but I think there may have been some later breaking info as well:

Another concern with the TDV6 engine is reported failures of the oil pump casting where it supports an idler pulley for the cambelt. The casting can break causing the timing belt to fail and results in catastrophic engine failure. This affects vehicles in the 2006 and 2007 manufacturing years (Vin numbers with 6A and 7A).
There is an upgraded oil pump casting: Part number LR013487 and prudent TDV6 owners should have this upgraded part fitted at the same time as the timing belt change. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Yes I would insist that they change the Oil Pump casing at the same time, as yours is in the 7A bracket. As for the 3 hours extra time thats what LR quote when doing it, but I would say nearer 2 hours extra when doing the belts as well.

If I was you I would also get the water pump changed at the same time, when I do this I only charge for the new water pump part and not for fitting as its a 5 min job with the front cam belt job.

Oh yes I have read more than enough to give me nightmares, I will defo be changing this
I was hoping flack or disco mikey may be able to shed some light on the process of changing this oil pump casing as Land Rover stratstone told me 3 hours, les pauls specialists have just told me its 6-7 hours worth work and is buried in bottom half of engine etc etc lots of work, seems no one wants to do this work ?? Is it that difficult to be changed.

No not if you know what your doing lol, If all goes well I can do them in around 4 hours..a bit less with my mucker GeoFF.

perhaps folk up north work faster or something

stratstone told me 6hours for the cam belt change then 3 hours extra for the oil pump

les pauls told me 6-8 hours for the oil pump alone

i reckon im gonna be driving up north soon at this rate

You could probably drive to Flack, spend the day shopping while he sorts your car out, and drive home, and still save money over going to a main dealer
