Kam, when did the facelift come out and what are the differences to look for to make sure I get one (If it ever got to that stage)

Faclifted X5.. Was i think around 53/04 plate onwards.
Basically they changed the interior slightly, (new style steering wheel biggest give away) also front lights changed over to the clear indicators and slightly wide eyed lights (with the angel eye rings for the sidelights - which do look cool to be fair)..change to the grill, also some differences to the alloys, they are much better on the newer X5's. Some engine changes as well, 4.6 is changed to 4.8is, 3.0d engine had some changes, mainly to turbo charger and i think it got a few more ponies, 4.4i stayed the same with just a few revisions, but obviously we're talking about 3.0d sport here right? They also changed the colour pallets somewhat.

Older X5

Newer X5

X5 got a facelift in 2003 I think for 04MY cars.

New front end, grille, bumper & headlight clusters. I think the diesel engine was changed too.... there's probably an exhaustive list out there somewhere.

Kam, I went on to that X5 link and asked their advice, the consensus of opinion seems to say that I should buy a used facelift 4.4 sport as I wil get one for high 20's and it will do 21mpg instea dof the 17mpg I get now.

Do you know much about this model and what they're like? L319 D4 HSE

Funnily enough, this model is the one i know least about, it is definitely the most depreciating model of the bunch. The 4.8 and 4.6is engines are the SC of the X5 stable, and hold their values well, as they were so bloody expensive to begin with so there aren't a hell of a lot of them about.

The 3.0d Sport especially the later facelifted cars, do best on the residuals, its amazing how spec sensitive they are, definitely get one with sat nav, bluetooth (if u can), xenons etc, and anything else is a bonus. I've seen some 2003-2004 cars between 24-30k and the spec makes a massive difference.

I think, as you're used to the 4.2 SC the closest car you'll get at what i think is a good price i.e mid-late 20's is the 4.4, but be warned they are likely to drop the fastest too, but it will pack a punch and will still give you the V8 rumble, i know you love soo much especially through them tunnels..

just arguing about whether a 4.4 is a good or bad choice, whether the market will become flooded soon with E53 X5s tus lowering values when the E70 comes out etc etc.

I test drove the diesel today, check out my thread under Off Topic. L319 D4 HSE

yeah i saw it mate.. don't think you could go wrong with the 3.0d Sport.. just get one, chip it and you'll be happy..
4.4 is market underdog, won't beable to sell them, when they become the new 10-15k car to have, as they will cost too much to run (or so people will think)! right now, we have sooooo many clients picking up the X5's, as some of the refuse to spend anything over £30k on a car, so the X5 3.0d is the car of choice for many of them.
