But that is what I'm saying, you remove the map before taking the car to a dealer.

That is what I always do, before taking the car to the dealer, for whatever reason, I always put back the original map.
I might be wrong, but I believe doing that they should not be able to figure out the car was ever mapped.

I got that but i was talking about something different, let me explain.

Your driving down the road - the car stops with various lights, you get LR assistance out, they recovery you to a dealer - you havent removed your map - they notice this...your warranty claim is rejected.

scenario 2

You remove your map after the engine has died - LR think this is odd, we will investigate - they have your engine and ECU back (you have removed the map) the interogate it and find you had a map on and removed it. Mike

Scenario 1

I always have the BAS tool in my car.
As long as I have electrical power in the car I should be able to remove the mapping an reload the original map, takes 2 minutes(done via the OBDII plug)

Scenario 2

You do not remove the map, but replace it with the original. LR will see that the map is there, the original one. The ECU will never be without map, either you have the original or you have the modified one.
Scenario 2 does not exist. '08 RRS TDV8

Even Pete has said you can tell its been written to - so you can actually tell, if you look, that the original has been taken off and put back on. Granted the dealer would struggle - but you can tell.

This was a topic on the defender forum when Pete launched his tool (ive been around that long!)

So sorry its not that simple Mike

I have to agree with MSE. The dealer does not have the access to tell if the ECU has been reflashed, but if LR get hold of the ECU, they can tell the date and time of when it was last flashed, how many times it has been done, which software version has just been put on etc...

Admittedly, they would only get that involved if they suspected the car had been mapped. and for a large warranty claim
