Hi all,

Just like to say hi and a big thanks for all the info on this site...been lurking for a while, and have now got a 55 plate java black s/c sport on the drive ......what a beast !!!

Have a quick question though, if anyone has any advice to offer. I notice that the temp gauge in the car doesn't go up to the middle, only goes up slightly but there is warm air in the car after a few mins. When we are in traffic the needle does go to the middle and then goes back down once we drive again.

My hunch is the thermostat is stuck open ......if so is it difficult to change ? And will I need to flush the system - any tips would be very much appreciated

Is there a procedure for bleeding the air - will I need to drain the whole system before I fit the thermostat, or can I just take the housing off replace and run the air out ?

I've just ordered the thermostat and will attempt to change it later this week, hopefully that will help the really bad fuel consumption at the moment ..LOL

Just had it Terracleaned aswell, (as seen on Wheeler Dealers) which has improved the running big time ! I'll need to get it serviced soon, so fingers crossed it will be working the best it can

Thanks Bobby ...the replacement thermostat is now in and working a treat ?!?!?..the temp goes to the middle and stays there too - which is a good sign.

Gets up to temperature quite quickly aswell. I also think the comsumption has improved too over the last week - it all helps I guess

If your mpg is affected id have a look at the coolant temp sensor as these can fail and make the car over fuel. Certainly a common issue on VWs but I imagine same principle applies. Want to do a DIY job on your car? Check out the definitive 'how to' thread in the technical section

Hi There,

apologies as I've only seen the replies to my post..

This only took me about 30mins or so, and I was taking my time. I had to take the air intake pipe off to give me better access to the housing - really easy, just undo the several screws which hold the top of the air box and then the big jubilee clip.

There is one bolt on the housing which sits furthest away from you (as you look into the engine bay) that is a little fiddly to get at - but that's it.

I changed the stat with the housing in situ, just a bayonet style fixing which holds it in place - its a bit firm, obviously, but a good set of fine tip pliers (opended) gave enough push to locate the new one. remember to replace the 'O' ring seal too for peace of mind.

Job done !
