TPS - Changing wheels & tyres

Hi all,

I've just acquired a set of new wheels and tyres which now need to be fitted to my beloved vehicle. My TDV8 (god bless her) has TPS and two local tyre centres have just told me they know little or nothing about transferring wheels when TPS is involved. One informs me the valves are very brittle and therefore likely to fail when being taken off the old set, the other centre (a large national chain) looked somewhat mystified and told me to come back on another day when their 'expert' is on duty as the team of chaps who look less than busy can't assist!

I tried searching on here for the 'idiots' guide to these systems but could not find anything that explained the process, can anyone assist??

Also the TPS light on my vehicle is always on, should it be so or does this mean I have issues with the current rubber??

Thanks in advance. --------------------------------------------------------

Many thanks Beancounter, very useful.

Having looked at the comments would I be correct in saying that if I have the new wheels fitted without TPS monitors that I'd be ok??

I check my tyre pressure regularly, regardless of TPS, so am not at all bothered about having this operational. I just want to ensure I won't have issues with the TPS system in the car if the wheels stop sending data to the receiving unit?? --------------------------------------------------------

To be honest, I think you'd need someone with the TPMS fitted to comment, but like you reading those posts, i can't see why you wouldn't be able to operate without them. Thumbs Up

I'm sure someone who has TPMS will be along soon Smile ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

I understand if you fit them without TPS then you will have errors and thus you will need to deactivate the system via autologic/test book

I did think you could transfer the TP sensors to other wheels though Mike

Thanks MSE, that was a concern of mine that the system will not cope if I don't get them transferred but the flip side is that the ‘tyre man’ seems to think the valves are rather delicate and likely to break as they take them off.

I can see me ending up having to go to a main agent with this and then ending up with a bill like a toucan! --------------------------------------------------------
