Just thinking about the next sport purchase....but i cant decide what the optimum time to change is - mainly from a residual value point of view

So i would welcome your input

Relatively speaking, when is the best time to change in the first 3 years.

Do i aim to change around 2 years old, wait till closer to 3 or start now at just over 1 year old...there isnt anything wrong with my current sport - im more than happy with it, but dont want to hold on and at 3 years realise the max value after the usual initial loss would have been to change it now. Mike

I was wondering that as I have a month left of warranty, will I see a big drop come July ?

Like you, there must be an optimum time...ill probably have to wait a while on a future order, so dont mind getting it in as such - but equally dont mind keeping my current sport

I always think winter best time to change a 4wd and if selling private some residual manufacturers warranty helps

if buying new your right muddy, if you are reliant on the market its makes little difference as the RRS your buying is also commanding a winter premium.

Glass and Cap monitor the market and make minor price adjustments each month based on a number of indicators, its a pretty hard thing to predict in fairness and I've given up on future value calculations for newer stock, used cars u can kinda predict slightly more accurate with seasonal peaks and troughs.

Used - A lot has to do with what and when you buy rather than when you sell I've found, buy the right car at the right time and more importantly at the right price and you can limit the depreciation.

New - Its more about model lifecycle than anything else, plus what your going into. Most cars show a pattern of dropping significantly for the first few months then levelling out for the 3 year period before slowing its monthly depreciation in subsequent years. As mentioned its model lifecycle that affects most cars more so the RRS , The RRS has always been an anomaly, on introduction it was hot property we bought and either sold the car for a premium after 1 year or held onto it for 2/3 and got our money back. Then demand evened out for a few years and the 2010MY came along, again demand went up,
but not to the levels of the earlier cars, with few premiums being paid which i sense was more to do with the economy than anything else.

Today dealers are offering significant discounts on MY 12/13 cars , mate of mine got 10% off a Red edition last week. All new sport is in the wings and this has a massive affect on future values as LR step up discounts and squeeze as much revinue out of the investment in the current model before switching tact with the release of the new model.

in summary there is a lot to take into account, but focus on buying at the right time and u won't go far wrong.... As per my other threads anyone want prices stick it in the "whats my car worth thread"

There is definitely a trend over the 3 years my observation is selling around year 2 is about right.

Your point about the new model - is a valid one - 12-24 months and it will be different which raises the interesting different question of change now to cycle for a change on the new model or not - either way you will always have one out of model sync. Mike
